in the thread summary page(e.g. the page where you can see all the current threads of a forum), the number of replies of a thread is now link to the last post of the thread
this allows two things:
1) you can go directly to the bottom of a thread to check the latest replies, instead of geting to the top(as you would from the normal link)
2) if the link has a visited color it means that noone posted after you(you have visited the page at the last post when you replied)

Oh, and #2 doesn't seem to work. I've seen dark-blued threads that have had posts in them since I posted.

Let me try to explain what we mean. Threads are displayed in two ways on apolyton at the moment: as the URL of the thread with a bookmark attached to it (#42 for example) which will take you to the last post in the thread (when you click the number). Now, this bit is essentially ignored by the browser, so if you've seen a thread once, this link irrespective of the number of the bookmark will stay in "visited" mode ie. be dark blue.
The other way threads are displayed is with the "?date=##:##" thing tagged onto the end of the URL. This really has no effect on what page the URL points to, but it makes your browser think that the URL points to a different thread each time that field has changed (which it does when a reply is made). What this means in practice is that (a) The real links on the front page show whether any relies have been made since you last saw the page (in which case they are light blue), and more importantly (b) Users behind firewalls can use UBB properly. (I cannot use ACOL well at school, for example, because it does not have this feature.)
Now, one problem with this is that when you make a reply to a thread it goes to a bookmark number (as done through the first method). If you then leave the thread, it is marked as unread (hey, that rhymes!), because the URL on the forum page will be pointing to the url with the new "?date=##:##" bit tacked on. Geddit?

Wait, I was mistaken! the post count link does not show threads you've seen, it shows thread you've replied to. The reason for this is that you always see threads through the second (date) format, which the Browser thins is a different URL. When you make a reply, however, you reach the "core URL" as explained above.
edit: One more thing: When there is a page break, the URL changes completely rendering the whole system useless after fifty posts.

Anyway, would it not be possible to add the ?date part to the url where you are directed after you post? If that would be possible it would show as read in the topics list and there would be no IE problems.

Can't you learn some day that most internet users use IE because it is a superior product? Don't make stupid mods that only tradition-bound netscape-geeks can use!

this is definetely a good addition.... yes, it does work on ie now, but you sould always make things compatible for both. ie5 actually is a superior product to netscape (especially when you're using the netscape which ALSO COMES PACKAGED WITH APPLE COMPUTERS!
