The one's in my posts are little HTML ads for Amazon, not the Google ones like everyone else.

Amusingly, Amazon's Associates terms are a bit vague, but it seems to say that whoever generates the ads gets the portion of revenue. They said they'd get back to me, but it looks like since it only appears whenever I post, I generate the ads, and as such I get the revenue from them...

More as this develops.

take a page from somethingawful. forget the paid membership, unless you can offer extra features.

examples would include searching, custom titles, and perhaps larger avatars (filesize, anyway).

if you're not into that, you could do the OTHER things, most notably selling avatars. anybody on somethingawful can pay $10 to change ANYONE ELSE'S avatar / custom title. do you have any idea how hillarious that could be? imagine if you started charging for avatars (locking current ones as is, to be fair). take somethingawful's rates: $5 to change your own, $10 to change someone else.

imagine ag paying $10 to change asher's avatar to the OSX logo, and then asher would either take it, or pay $5 to have it changed back.

^^^ This man knows what he is talking about. That whole thing would be hilarious. Plus, this way, you can get rid of the whole "get to 500 posts and get a shiny new avatar!~~~!!!" thing. If someone without that many posts wants one, they can pay 5 bucks to get one.

As for changing others avatars, the mods would go through and verify that each one was in ine with the forum rules. No huge red text of "I AM A ****ING TROLL. DO NOT LISTEN TO ANYTHING I HAVE TO SAY. EVER." kind of titles.

I would gladly pay for such a type of membership.

The ads-in-posts suck worse than pop-ups. They are intrusive and can lead to people "endorsing" things they find personally repugnant. Not cool at all.
