With the discovery of Ivory to our east, I would lean towards a path to math. I find that Zeus is the second most powerful ancient era wonder (after the pyramids) in most of my single player games. With how this game is going to be played, I would believe that it is even more critical.

Normally I would have to say Iron with out a dout, however, the presesnse of Ivory does make for an interesting change of events.

If another team started with Bronze Working, they stand a strong chance of going for Iron. If we meet them without having done Iron yet, Iron would then become cheaper.

Meeting a team that has Math already is not a very good possibility. First they would have to have Alphabet, then they would also have to have access to Ivory. This is not a glaring possibility.

Still another thing to consider, is do we really need Math yet? Would we really push so hard to build SoZ that we would need Math at this point? I don't think so, but I'm reserving my vote for more arguements.

Suffering from ads?

200 shields is a fortune at this time. I would prefer to have at least 4 cities up and running before we shift one over to wonder production.

Also, first to philosophy means one free tech. Lets not forget that.

I lean strongly for writing, but will hold my vote for a bit still.

I was thinking of masonry- but we would be researching a tech which others have - and which we can no doubt get our hands on well before we need it.

Writing is the way to go.

The best thing about Writing is that it leads to several other techs. This opens up trade possibilities after we have met other civs.

Regarding the Philo gambit:

The only other team starting with Alphabet is CDG. They are the Vikings, start with Apha and Warrior Code. They will be in a hurry to get to invention so they can use their truely awesome UU. Since they start with Archers and Bronze working is cheap, and do not rely on Iron, I feel that they have probally gone for the gambit. Since we opted for Pottery first, I do not think we can get Philo first and we would have wasted a lot on trying to get what amounts to squat.

Regarding Iron:
The presence of Ivory makes the need for Iron not as important IMO, but I still withold my vote for more arguments.

Hmm looks like my writing idea is gaining momentum.

Wellwhat is it gonna be rush to Iron working so we can fight PAL ala Uber or go for writing so we have something to trade PAL ala Beta?

The choice is yours! and good discussion.

I am leaning toward Writing. We haven't contacted any other civs yet so it is possible they are not on our continent. If we are alone we will require less defense initially and can definately afford to build Zeus. The sooner we can start the prebuild the better. Once Zeus is built we will be in an extremely good position. Who in their right mind would attack us? Hoplites and Ancient Horsemen.

I'm giddy thinking about it.

CDG (our only realistic competator for Philosphy) is showing very slow growth. We are also #1 in GNP. Pottery was a necessary detour to get granaries, which will boost our growth and, as a result, our commerce. Pottery also allows us to receive Mapmaking as our free tech if we are first to Philosophy.

If we beat the world to Philospophy, I'll vote for us getting the most expensive tech possible with it.

IF, and a big if it is, we get philosophy, the two best choices for a free tech are COL (the rush to republic) or map making (most expensive of the techs that will be available). As there will no doubt be pleanty of relatively cheep techs available that we will need , I feel republic can probably wait, so I would go for map making in this game.

Best choice I've seen in my own games was Monarchy [2X as expensive as Map Making] Emperor level single player. But to get this someone else has to reserach Polythesism and be willing to sell it before we finish reseraching Philosophy first, so it might not be adviable.

Assuming that prices haven't changed from Conquests 1.00
Map Making is more expensive than Code of Laws and Map Making costs is equal to Polythesism.

It's like ToE: upon researching Philosophy, we pick a tech to research. We then get that tech instantly, and have to pick another.

If we were to somehow pop Masonry from a hut, then I think we know which tech to take as our free tech.
