Scene 14 : The 11th Day

Once again the villagers met in Theben's empty butcher's shop to debate the case and to vote for who would be killed.

The votes were evenly divided between Skanky Burns and GJRamsey.

Skanky stood speechless, as did GJRamsey. The villagers looked at one another. They knew that they could not change their votes...

"We'll have to toss a coin again" remarked Doc

The good doctor took a coin from his pocket and flicked it up into the air. It landed on the floor, and he quickly put his foot over it.
"Call" ordered the Duke "Heads or tails"

Neither Skanky or Ramsey made a move.

"Dammit then," said Felch "Someone say something."
"They're both cowards. They're afraid," commented Zopperoni

"I'll call" said ADG. "If I get it right, Skanky dies, otherwise Ramsey"
"Why not kill them both?" asked Ghengis "To make sure we get the killer"
"The Old Way doesn't work like that," replied Mart "You always have to kill one suspect"
"Let's go with ADG's plan" said the Duke.
"Tails, then," called ADG.

Doc lifted his foot. Everyone leaned forward to see the coin. It was "heads".

Skanky punched the air and cried "Yippeee!"
GJRamsey just started to quietly cry.

"Let's do this thing" said Kassiopea.

GJRamsey was taken into the town square and staked to the ground so that he was flat on his back. Then Mart poured motor oil and diesel oil over him and set him alight. He burnt with a rapid "whumpf" and the villagers used him to toast marshmallows.

It is now night once more

Scene 15 : The 11th Night

After the impromptu barbecue in the town square the Duke walked back to his manor house on the edge of the village. As it was a cold night he decided to have a quick cup of cocoa before sleeping.

He rang a small silver bell and waited.

"ZOPPERONI!!!!" He yelled "WHERE ARE YOU DAMMIT MAN!!!"

He rang again.

Shortly he heard heavy footsteps on the stairs, and he sat down in his favorite armchair to compose himself. The door creaked open behind him.

"Ah, Zopperoni, a cup of cocoa man, and don't hang about."

There was no response. Duke started to sit up, but suddenly he couldn't breath. He scrabbled at his neck, but someone had grabbed the golden Ducal chain round his neck from behind the chair and was strangling him. He struggled to turn around to see his killer, but his vision was fading to black...

* * * * *

When the Duke woke up, his first thought was "What a terrible dream," But then he realised that he was tied to his armchair. There were footsteps behind him, and then the killer stood before him.

"Hello Duke" he said
"You!" spluttered Duke "I don't believe it!"
"Yes, I was rather amused by your pathetic searching for clues"

The killer turned away and came back with one of the Duke's hunting shotguns.

"You're going to shoot me, just like you shot Alva?"
"Not exactly" replied the killer and reversed his grip to swing the rifle butt at the Duke's head. Duke watched the improvised club swing back, hold a moment and flick down towards his face. Time seemed to stop.

That shape... those muscles... the way he held it... It was beautiful, almost like an artist...

There was a sickening crunching sound.

It is now day again, and you find the body of Duke
