Got spare money?

Bumping the thread now that it appears we've found the eastern edge of the starting land mass ...

If we really want Ivory at all, it needs to be the first settler, escorted, founded on the hill tile for defense, and additional Hoplites built form our capital and brought in to defend.

All city sites east of Apolyton out to where we intend to expand pre-first war are also now of higher priority than all city sites west of Apolyton.

first settler for ivory. we get it early and establish our stake in the west. admittedly, it will be a sub-par city for a while, but with a granary we'll REX like hell.

First of all, the Ivory is in the east.

Second, we've tried a similar thing with Lux Invicta, claiming horses and iron. That situation was a little different, because Webringen also claimed it and started a war. I do not see CDG do that for now.
But the common factor, and main lesson learned, is:

the second city should not be sub-par no matter what

BFM

Build in the direction of the ivory, perhaps, but our main concerns should be distance to capital, and tile access.

Inflate your Upload Space

Personally, I think that we should build the first town 669 of Apolyton, then build town No 2 666699 of Apolyton, on the hill.

No 3 should be 3336 of 'Poly, but should be a camp town. Build a Barracks, and it should be possible to get 2turn hoplites from that city.
Nasty

I do know that this uses CxC city spacing, but I think that the advantages are too good to miss

I've followed this thread, and I am with Krill.

2nd city at 6-6-9. Third at 6-6-6-6-9-9.

I was thinking the 4th at 3-3-2.

This is fairly similar to Togas' earlier plan, other than the build order, and the ivory city gets built on the hill - which for a second-ring city - in this game - should be a given where possible.

Starting on the southern coast, the most obvious city location is #2 in Togas' picture:

Working our way north, #1 is a very good candidate. It does not waste a bonus grassland, the distances towards our capital and to #2 are pretty good, and it's in the direction of Ivory.

Then, #3 or the hill next to it (is that hill on the river, anyway?) is a very logical spot, too, to claim the Ivory.

As for the build order: start with #1, obviously. It has good land, and puts us in the direction of the Ivory. After that, I'm undecided between founding #2 and claiming the Ivory. I guess it depends on our relations with CDG and on their actions.

BFM - our plans jive completely. I agree with #1, followed by the hill next to #3, followed by #2.

OK Im going to throw a monkey wrench into everything here.

First of all CGN is behind us. They just dont REX like we do, period

Second of all getting the core established is a VERY IMPORTANT thing. Right now PAL is beginning to accelerate past us. This could be partially because we took the granary first gambit, and because they got a good spot AND are agricultural AND we think they popped a setler from a hut about 7 or 8 turns ago. We NEED to get the core established!!!!!!!!!!

Why dont we do this:

Settle site 1 next per BFM's diagram. Then continue to settle the core around our capitol in a manner thet will produce the most sheilds/food/commerce over the long run at the times we need any of those particular boosts.

In the meantime we keep an eye on CGN, IF we think they are making a run for the Ivory then we divert a settler from core expansion and setlle BFM's site claiming the Ivory.

Or in the meantime when we are ready to actually switch a prebuild to Zues we then settle the Ivory city.

While we are core building a worker needs to be dedicated to building the road network in city #1 and making sure we can get a settler to the Ivory site quickly.

We can keep an eye on CGN with our warrior to the south of there capitol. We had talked about using warriors near there capitol for psych warfare anyway.

This way we can keep building our core and then only interrupt the core build up when:

1. We have to because we think CGN is making a run for the Ivory

2. We want to because its time to hook up Ivory to switch the prebuild to Zues.

Im bringing this up because we seem to have this urge to get Ivory now but we dont NEED it now. We need it just in time to switch a prebuild to Zues. And when we build a city out there by the Ivory it will be a marginal performer sheild/ commerce wise for a LOOOOOONG time.

Think about this and comment.

I'm of 2 minds when it comes to our options. 1st being that we need to ensure our continual production capabilities, this means a strong core. 2nd being that we need to be sure that we get that Ivory, if anything, to denign CDG from getting it (I am loath to think of them having Zeus and limited land).

I say we get the tobacco site up and running, then get the ivory site settled right afterwards (then backfill, getting our border setup). We should keep an eye on that spot, just to make sure that CDG doesn't send a settler there before we do. If they do, then we need to keep them from getting to it before we do, even if it means war.

let's see if we can do something along these lines.
