Catapult odds?? Inflate your Upload Space

So - I'm sure this has been explained, charted, and analyzed to death somewhere - but what are the odds of catapults hitting various units, and eliminating city improvements?

And as an extension - the odds for the other bombard units?

Can someone direct me to the appropriate thread, or provide an explanation, please.

Many thanks!

I don't know that I've ever seen any articles about that, aside from the one you linked.
I do know that - at least in C3C - I really like bombard units, even if most of my military is mounted. I'll specifically build a few slowmovers to escort my bombard stack.
So, not having any numbers, all I can say is that I find cats, trebs, and cannons to be both effective and cost-efficient.

Sorry I don't have any info more technical than that.

IIRC, buildings, population and tile improvements had a base defence of 16 in civ3+ptw. I don't know if that has been changed in c3c but units in cities are now targeted before buildings/population(and city walls before units).

What I want to know is how the counterattack works. When you attack a stack with bombard-units, there is a change you lose hitpoints from the counterbombard. How does this work? Is it bombard strength vs defence+modifiers? If that is the case, it would pay off to attack with med.infs before you attack with longbowmen, as your medinfs have lower change of getting hit by the counterbombard.

It's just bombard strengh vs defence. There are no modifiers for terrain. Yes, a med. inf is more likely to survive or do more damage than a longbowman. Personally, I often value med. infs over longbowmen so much that I'd attack the other way round anyway.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

So you won't benefit by attacking from high ground then, good to know

Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Thanks for your comments and input.

Sounds to me like this could use a more comprehensive written piece. I find it interesting that certain elements of this game have been disected and analyzed to a very detailed level, but not something as seemingly key as the bombard units.
