Berzerkers all the way.
They are our salvation in the dire situation we are experiencing: they are highly mobile (4 moves per turn, if they're on a boat) and have very serious punch. It is not uncommon to see them beat riflemen.
With enough berzies, we could give the Spanish a serious lesson, thus expanding in good lands close to our capital, and hindering their efforts at counterattack. Besides, since it is unlikely we can conquer them at once, we could milk as many techs, cities and money as possible in the peace negociations, to resume the invasion on the remaining Spanish lands 20 turns later.
Until Spain becomes a harmless State we can take on when we please, the only infrastructure we should concentrate on are barracks and harbors: for the rest, let's swing our axes
Edit: I am normally a builder, a defender of the builder way. But we need to use our main asset the best we can, especially as we are in a weak situation. Berzies are probably the best UU in the game for a "rebirth" of a weak civilization. They are vastly overpowered for a medieval unit, they are highly mobile, and they are plentiful (thanks to the GA they provoke). Besides, the AI has trouble opposing a well-crafted human invasion.
If we miss our opportunity at territorial expansion during our GA, we are as good as toast. There will be no other opportunity to beat opponents who rely on superior technology and superior production. Maybe we could survive till the end of the game, but we'll have no chance whatsoever to win.
