Tired of ads?

I think they will release a final patch, as I said at the time, but it was never likely to come quickly. They made public the fact that almost no one was still working on Civ3, despite the blatant things that need fixing.

Well from their perspective it isn't the point, since any prospective new buyers wont be bothered by some bugs/imbalances they may never notice playing by themselves.

The only case that can be made is that Firaxis shoot themselves in the foot by signalling to the community that they wont support Civ4 when Civ5 is underway, which is not a wise thing to signal.

I guess they are gambling that we will buy either way and hope.

Sadly their cynical (hypothetical ) viewpoints on both these issues is probably right.

well, jesse admitted that firaxis did lots of mistakes and that they've learned of it.

yes, i know, talk is cheap... but one good step in making the game quality more promising: they've started from scratch! even in c3c there was still code from civ1 and civ2 in it. hearing from people who saw the code, the general comment was "uhrghhhhh"

and despite the bugs still in c3c... the game is very well playable and still is a lot of fun!

and panag: no, i doubt millions more can be sold... most who want the game, have it already...

Of course, having to start from scratch doesn't give me confidence in the original products. Reusing code from Civ1 and Civ2 shouldn't be problematic if it were well-engineered, but if it makes people go "uhrghhhhh"...people think it's normal for code to become horrible over time, but really, it isn't.

Of course, that doesn't make the games worth less than they are. And many games have it much worse. You wanna know how much worse? SimCity 2000 reused a bunch of code from The Sims. (Yeah, The Sims had a good number of years before being completed and released, but there was still code for it way back then.) Even the final version of the code had routines like DrawHouse and DrawYard that didn't do anything like the names suggested. And, in my opinion, the actual product wasn't a whole lot better. SimCity 2000 is definitely my least-favorite of the SimCity games...

well, you're forgetting that civ1 is over 10 years old and was programmed by a young and not well funded team.

and software engineering isn't a new concept, but it only seems that in the last few years its importance is seen and valued by many companies.

completely rewriting code lets them get a clean start. and after what i've seen from and heard about the code of civ3... it was really miserable in some parts!

anyway, rewriting or extending... in the end it's important that the total cost (including patching, maintaining and expansion packs) is low. with the old code of civ, this isn't guaranteed (that's why the submarine bug still couldn't be figured out )

yes they could fix this

\they have our money

we have their unfinished product

they are creeps for cheating us

they are lucky we are loyal to the legend of Civ

if they went bankrupt tomorrow and were thrown into a debtors gaol, I would not weep to much

I ask, and have asked before, where did all the money go?

why did they continue to put out such shoody patches?

inquiring minds are curious

Nah, the 1.22 hardly has any bugs left over.
The things is that there are some serious bugs.

But compared to 1.15b, 1.22 has less bugs, and didn't come with new bugs.

Besides that, software does have bugs.
It always has had bugs and it'll always have bugs.
The more complex the software is, the more bugs it'll have.

That's something we'll have to live with.
It's impossible to deliver a 100% perfect piece of software that satisfies people at the same time.
