So, I'll just start working on it in secret and release the real thing April 1 next year.

I hope you're not thinking of pretending to do it for another year so you can get us again...you might as well dangle a baby in front of a starving dingo.

Mercator,

my aumount of time is also limited. However, I seriously believe that if we'd we able to work in a team, the pressure of one over the other will make us to work more.

I'm thinking about .NET.

.NET is a Microsoft plattform that can run both on PC and Visual Basic, and where the compoments are compiled into a middleware language, just like in Java. You could write code in Visual Basic .NET and I can code in C# .NET, and we can join our effort and it *should* work in MAC.

The only problem with all this is how ***** expensive is a .NET suite....

Uh, Merc, is that lightbulb in response to the "April Fool's Continuation" idea, or the "dangle baby in front of starving dingo" idea? I'm not sure which is more evil...

Despite the hardships involved, this utility would be a lasting testament to the genius of Mercatore and yaroslav.

A fine legacy to remind the other civ people that CIV2 still rules!

Yes, very true...

Except I don't have VB.NET. And I can't really afford it either, especially since I'd have to upgrade Windows as well.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

By the way, yaroslav, and anyone else... I had a thought today... What about I start a "Civilization II SAV/SCN file format" thread? I know there's already the hex-editing doc, and some threads in the hints/tips/guides forum, but I'm actually talking about something like my Civ3 BIC initiative, which is still going rather nicely:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...threadid=105623

That would make the whole thing much more accessible and public. And anyone can easily look things up or add some new discoveries. It would still come down to one person (probably me) to edit the whole thing, but at least everyone will know it's out there, and I can't just keep it hidden away and hope nobody ever asks.

If we ever want to make some decent all-encompassing civ2 editors, the whole format will have to be disassembled anyway, so it would be best to do it now, and do it in public.

Thoughts?

If someone did make this editor, HINT HINT, scenario production time could be substantially cut.

OK, I'll start the thread later this week...

I'm not quite sure yet how I can gracefully incorporate all the different civ2 versions though.

I salute thee, Mercatore!

PS
MGE seems to be the most useful version - perhaps that would be the best CIV2 to aim at?

Absolutely not! I don't have MGE myself anyway.

If I'm going to do it at all, it will include information about ALL versions, or at least for classic/CiC (the same), FW, MGE 1.3 and ToT 1.1.

I'll figure something out... The two extremes are keeping 4 different formats (either in 1 or 4 different threads), or rolling it all into one, using colors and whatnot to distinguish the different versions. It might take a while before I get around to it, but I will (if not today, it'll probably be next weekend).

Well, if you made FW first, I believe that works with FW and MGE, so covering most people.

I'm only talking about the file formats... They're not that different, so it's very little effort to figure them out, really (as far as the differences is concerned). The biggest problem is writing it down in a concise manner, without being overly confusing.

... Just to let you know I haven't forgotten about the file format thread yet, but it's probably going to be early next month before I start it (busy, busy ).
