I suspect that MarkG has got fed up with Apolyton - fed up with the OT in particular - but fed up generally. I bet he wants to move on to other things in his life and not be chained to this site.

His baby, Apolyton, has grown up and developed. Maybe he no longer likes what he sees? The result, he intends to kill his baby. Little by little. A slow death, an ebbing away of life. The dripping of blood at one thread each per day.

And then, in his mind, it will be perfect. It'll be just like he imagines the old days - when it was fun.

I think this recent event says much for the long-term future of the site. I, for one, will be sad when it closes.

Well, you are just plain wrong.
MarkG is just doing what he thinks is in the best interest of this site. He see's it as a protection against an organized spam attack.
And he is correct.
Both DanQ and MarkG have put a lot of work into this site. They have no intention of trying to kill it. If that's what they wanted, they could just close it down... like many other civ sites have

JETW: you're way off track here. You are reading too much into the situation. We have no intention of killing Apolyton or anything of the sort.

And, for some reason, you have left me out of the equation in referring to Apolyton being only Markos' 'baby'. Perhaps you did so because it would sound weird using that terminology, and you would probably be right...
