Maximizing SGL Generation Suffering from ads?

i'm in a bunch of PBEMs, and i play a few turn based MP games as well with friends i know in real life, and I have only generated 2 SGLs in MP since conquests came out, and one of those was in a scenario.

in one of my recent turn based MP games, one of my friends got a SGL when he got iron working, and got the pyramids on turn 40-something. he's been leading the game ever since, expanding faster than anyone can fathom.

so, i'm looking for a strategy for maxmizing my SGL generation for the next game we play. i'm trying to think of what techs to get when, in what order, to have the most oppurtunities for SGLs (ie, the first person to a tech).

any ideas?

I would say it's pretty hard to maximise your chances due to the complete randomness of SGL generation and the relatively low chances of it occurring. Having said that though, I suppose logic would dictate that the first step is to check your opponents and don't research any of their starting techs. Your ability to outresearch them of course will depend on the level you're playing.

I have not had a lot of success in getting SGL's. Even ignoring games played at Sid or Demi. I have had a number of games that I got first to a tech for 30 or more techs and got only one SGL.
Only once did I get three and I was a Science civ then. I would suggest that SGL not be allow in in MP or PBEM games, they are too powerful.

But if you come up with a method, let us in on it.

Suffering from ads?

vmxa1, 1 in 30 sounds about right. Isn't the probasbility of SGL generation 3% for a non-scientific civ and 5% for a scientific civ?

In any case, it's pretty streaky. I waited 2 months to get my first SGL, then got 2 in one game.....and perhaps only 1 since then!

Conclusion: "SGL generation" is not a strategy really worth spending much time on developing!

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Yeah, I am not saying I should get more at all. It is just to point out that getting lots of tech first will not automatically yield SGL's.

You need a scientific civ (obviously) and a tech lead to maximize the number of SGL's.
This means that you need warfare and research.
I usually use a lot of alliances in order to slow down the tech pace of the AI.
In the last Babylonian game (emp/standard) this resulted in 4 SGL's and 10 MGL's.
(Especially the first one, after researching writing helped a lot..)
(Not that SGL's in the modern age matter much, since the game was already over.)
But it is a matter of luck; you can not 'rely' on SGL's like I rely on MGL's to be able to beat the higher levels (demi/deity,
didn't manage to beat Sid).

Agreed that SGLs should not be permitted in MP/PBEM...not that I'll ever try MP at the speed I play! Even PBEM might be unfair to the other players. I did some succession games of CTP2 and they were a blast. Even I can manage 20 turns at a (long) crack.

To maximise SGLs is simple: pick a scientific civ and be first to lots of techs.

Failing those, just be luckier. Buy a rabbit's foot or something.

Oops! I've been spotted!

I started AU502, got creamed, restarted and was doing OK, but I noticed I just wasn't having any fun (unlike AU501). Likely I'll go back to it when I finish what I have in progress...you know, in a year or two.
