I've won a bunch of Transcend SP, and some MP. I usually get sick of playing and win diplomatically, since my population has exploded relative to anyone else's, but sometimes I stick it out to transcendence. My highest score is in excess of 800%, and I could get much higher if I were willing to spend enough hours. That said, I don't consider it that impressive, since I use all the reasonable exploits like crawlers and pop booms. |
Pretty much ditto
I've won at least one game in SP on transcend with each of the factions just to prove I could. I also did each type of victory once just to check out the movies/endings that arise.
Other things I have done
1. Several variations of the one City Challenge-- IIRC I have done this with 3 different factions now but usuually its the university
2. Three or 4 times I have won the "switching sides" challenge. You take over the worst faction repeatedly (2-4 times in most variations) after bringing your previous faction to the top of the powergraph.
3. Twice I have won a conquest victory without ever building or retaining a base. This one is actually pretty easy with a worm faction and a tiny map with linked landmasses. If a faction is on an island its pretty much impossible.
4. Any number of self-imposed challenges including
-no crawlers
-limited bases
- no probes
- no trading techs
- vendetta with everyone
- no attacking anything outside your territory
etc etc.
I have lost once to the AI in the last couple of years. I tried Miriam with double blind research and tech stagnation. I got stuck on an island with room for 3 bases and couldn't get the WP or a boat.
Also I have completed something like 30+ MP games and duels and have won more than I have lost but am far from the elite. One game with buster of CGN fame humbled me and destroyed any illusions that I might have ever had about my skill level. I was actually happy to be second strongest but had to capitulate when he rolled the other 2 players

As for me, my highest rating (can't find the score in my "SMAC records" document) is 155%, with only seven bases on the map of planet. Played as a custom faction:
+2 Growth
+1 Industry
-1 Police
-2 Morale
Free rec commons every base
Social Psych and Ethical Calc as starting techs
Note: don't ask why I made such a stupid faction, I really do not know. |
What do you mean, stupid-- THis faction should be a powerhouse. The free rec commons means no drone problems so the police minus is almost irrelevant and starting with ethical calc and +2 growth means you can be pop booming ridiculously easy-- heck demo planned gets you there without even building a creche

Something like 4-5 times. I've only played one SP game properly from start to end, and it took me something like a week or a bit more. I tried to transcend as fast as I could on a huge map, and there was a fair amount of micromanagement involved.

For anyone with time constraints I recommend a one city challenge. Its a lot less timeconsuming and can show how you can win by simply grovelling for a while until your insane amounts of crawlers and trawlers allow you to out-tech everyone.
Its actually a simple game to play in some ways since so many issues you normally face do not arise

Sold. What are the guidelines for such a styled game? Is there a list of guidelines for other "challenges"? |
yes-- There was a list of them on a thread here-- search OCC or challenges
My recommendation is to start out just trying to win with a single base. To be clear you cannot end ANY turn with more than one base. Try to transcend. Once you do that trhen move on to the more difficult challenges which have rules as to how many secret projects you must get, or may not permit yyou to EVER have 2 bases etc

I bumped an old OCC thread of mine so you can see some variants of the "rules".
Really you can do it any way you want-- just set some rules and go for it
