demigod and govenrment Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

i am currently playing a game
diff : demigod
map size : standard
Map type :archipello
barbarians : sedimentry
tribe : dutch

im afraid ive no save to post (im in work atm)

as a player i used to play at monarch only. last few months ive moved up to emporer and now Demigod. im working up to have a crack at sid.

im posting here becuase im not sure if did the right thing.
currently im on turn 176. through the game so far i only reaserched at 10%, thus getting all my self reasearched advances at 50 turns (those being writing-lituture (with prebuid for GL), code of laws and currently republic.

i have the GL.

my problem is that im still in depotism. only got monarchy about 10 turns ago (from GL) and as ive only ~ 20 turns till republic im holding off switching.

this hasnt hurt me to bad becuase ive had to pretty much fight wars to make space for me. (but have captured 4 wonders as well).
i know their is 1 more civ (turks i think) that i havent met and they have just completed Sun Tzu's.

i know im gunna win this game (ive been luck in iron sweepstakes, i have, neighbours dont ), ive gotten to my critical size. am working towards switching to rep, and getting feudalism > swiss mercs and then GA.

on the more difficult games should i expect to be in depotism for so long? in emporer, my own reasarch rate was ok so i moved thru advances much quicker.
but for demigod i decided that Tech trading and GL was the way to go rather than reasearch.

Increase Your PM Length

just a couple of corrections

on the govermnent issue, ive found depotism great for rushing buildings using drafted citizens in my newly taken cities.

Turn is 166. yr 510 AD

ive enclosed the map.

im planning on building the FP in either kyoto or tokyo. (will use leader, im already late building it)

ive never done a palace move before but am considering moving it to Tiwanaku. is it worth it or would another city be more suitable?

Suffering from ads?

As a rule I find that you have to research Mon/Rep yourself at Demi and above. I have been playing a fair amount of Sid lately and it seems hard to find a time to switch, but for non religious civs that is always a problem.

It sounds like you can afford to switch when you want to after you get Rep. Just do not forget the hit for maint of units.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

That's not really enough land, but if playing for a peaceful victory the choice about whether to take more and delay republic is a thorny one. Generally I'd say by 510AD you should either have conquered what you need and switched or just said this'll do and switched.

For a more warlike game I'd ordinarily switch to Monarchy before 510AD.

I know rushing in your unproductive cities can be tempting, but the benefits of switching usually outweigh it. Another factor to consider is to try and time the switch to not screw your position in the tech race too much.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

My despotism trick is to get all my outlying cities up to size 2 (after getting a temple and a worker out of them) then leave them at 1 citizen and 1 scientist. (all corruption anyways). This is enough to rush literacy, after which you can move to a more normal distribution. This for example, would let you research republic very fast with 0-20% science (last mp game at sid-level (no cpus of course) i was hitting tech every 4 turns with 0% science).

This 80-100% tax builds up a LOT of money for the switch to republic, after which you use all the built up money to buy courthouses everywhere. On your frontiers (if there is still room to settle) you will use the money to buy settlers in your outlying towns as they hit size three. Usually I reach republic around 1000-800BC (sometimes earlier).

For example in my latest game as England on a huge archipeligo (with 80% water) on Diety level I have just researched replacable parts, industrialization, and scientific method (tech every 4 turns) by 500AD. And no, I am specifically not trading up tech with the cpus... they are all way behind me (poor Arabs don't have writing yet, but Babylon and the Netherlands are at war with riflemen/frigates, being stopped by my Man o Wars though).

ta guys.

i switched around ten turns after.
still on the war path though.

its turn 234 (approx 1200ad). my main competitor is the ottomans, they are half way cross the world.

ive since taken full control of my nothern island, formally japans main island. ive elimnated russia, who only had 4 cities, no iron but 2 new Lux.

currently im a couple of techs behind the ottomans , but im reaserching at about 1/5 turns plus stealing when i can. they and the germans (3rd biggest) are at war with me. but ive inlisted 2 buffer civs between me an the ottomans im my war (the are Tech clients) and japan is proping up my treasury for peace.

im not going for a peace full win just yet, thats too uncertain. my current goal is to take some german cities (they are much closer, and have 1 lux i want). try catch up to ottomans tech wise. and eventually try establish a foot hold in their island.
