Game of the Year is original Civ3 only, but patched to the last version (1.29)

Gold is Civ3+PTW, both patched to the latest versions (PTW's is 1.27)

Unless you for some reason are not at all interested in Conquests, I'd recommend getting the cheapest copy of civ3 you can find (probably an original unpatched release in the big box) and Conquests. Conquests will patch Civ3 automatically and will also install PTW (minus the PTW editor and the PTW extras, IIRC)

Seems that there are multiple versions out because the Gold version I bought from Amazon.co.uk was nothing but Civ3 and PTW slapped together in a cardboard box.

I didn't even get a manual and that annoys me.

I don't have Gold so I wouldn't know if there are differences, but I think all Gold versions could very well be like that. I haven't read anything about it being, say, on a single CD instead.

Yeah, a lot of games seem to come with slimmed-down to no manuals.

What happened to manuals? It's not like it costs that much money, and I'm willing to pay for it if inculded in the price.

I love it when a game comes with a big fat manual, kind of like SMAC, and to a lesser extent Civ3 (Vanilla). I've heard the Jane's series of games come with amazingly thick manuals...if only other producers followed suit.

Manuals cost. You have to spend time/money to create them and they add to the weight and hence shipping cost.

I am with you thought up the price to cover it, but give them to us.

Yes, but I paid for Civ3 and feel cheated that they only bundle a crappy .pdf with it. A game such as Civilization deserves more (even if it's a later print of the CD). I got a manual when I bought Conquests, but it only covers the new tech.

If you're willing to pay, I bet you can get the PDF printed and bound at a print shop.

It just isn't quite the same, though. Not only do I like fat manuals, but also really like it when they're done with style. Like a nice matte finish, or made to look fitting in the genre/era that the game takes place in. The Civ3 manual should be epic, as befitting of the game. The SMAC manual, though really good, should have been like a technical manual, as also befitting of the game (the game's mechanics specifically). Flying games should have manuals that look like airplane training manuals...you get my point. I want the whole package to have effort, and I don't care if it costs an extra 5 or 10 dollars...not that I'd pay that much for the manual serparately...

Put an end to popups!

Sometimes I miss old style chunky manuals, but as long as the savings are passed on I'm not really bothered. Are they though...........?

I've never actually seen one of those. I have seen a few excerpts though, so I know they can be pretty dire. Almost along the line of the Atari 'tips' that someone posted recently.

Yes, if you don't build settlers you can't expand. Build units or you can't defend yourself. And don't forget to do some research.

Yes, I am. That's why I didn't pirate it. It's quite amazing that actually buying the damn thing rewards you with a broken copy protection and a .pdf manual.

Thanks Firaxis (or rather Atari)!

I have the Civ3 GotY edition in the "small" box and it does come with the manual. It also comes with a little video on the making of Civ3... and the 1.29 patch.

Given that the patch you can download off the net and the video is... well... superflous, I seriously wonder how they had the nerve to re-sell Civ3 after it cost about $30 back up to $50 with these two new additions.

The tin can LE Civ 3 sold here comes with two copies of the game (one English and one Korean) with matching manuals. Pretty wasteful if u ask me, save the trees!

Instead of the distributor cutting corners, more likely, the online shops are carrying manualless stock to save on shipping. My copy of Gold from retail comes with a 200+ page manual.
