LAN Game Bug? Suffering from ads?

Hello all. I have a problem getting my LAN game (two computers at my house) to work. The network I have is probably typical of many. I have a broadband router / firewall that acts as a DHCP server on my internal network, assigning an IP to each computer on the network. The default gateway for each PC is the IP of the router / firewall.

Sequence of Events:
Computer A enters the lobby of a TCP/IP LAN game. The PC is stable provided no one else enters the lobby. Computer B enters the lobby, Computer A displays a message "Could not enter the lobby", or something like that. Computer A re-enters the lobby. Typically Computer B displays the "Could not enter the lobby" message.

OK, Computer A enters the lobby and creates a new game BEFORE Computer B enters the lobby (game has not yet been launched). Computer B enters the lobby and sees the game created by the user on Computer A. Computer B attempts to join the game, and receives a message stating that the game is full.

Here's how you can deal with this problem: DON'T USE DHCP. Instead, assign each computer an IP address the old-fashioned way (network setup in Windows). DO NOT enter a default gateway when you configure the IP address, leave it blank. As long as there is no default gateway, everything appears to work! Of course, your PC won't be able to get on the internet until you put a default gateway back in!

This is bizarre behavior, because on a typical LAN every PC is going to have a default gateway. However, I haven't been able to determine another way to make this work! Has anyone else found another solution?

Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

This is not the only way to do it.... I dont want to reconfigure my network settings every time i want to play ctp and access the internet....so instead do this....

Use IPX.

In case you dont know how this is how you install the IPX protocol:

Goto --> Control Panel
Open -->Network(or Network Connections if your on XP)

If on windows 95 98 or ME. (doing this by memory) -.O
Click on install
click on protocol
click on IPX (it should have IPX/SPX or somthing in the name)
click ok
click ok
reboot

If on XP
right click on local area connection
click properties
click install
click on protocol
click on IPX
click ok
click ok
reboot if it tells you to.. usually you dont have to.

Even if this doesnt fix the problem its good to have the IPX protocol installed because many of the older games use it and the TCP/IP can be quite buggy somtimes.

toydolls0101 that will work in head to head games in the same house but not on the internet servers. The game servers are TCP based.

Using IPX will let you play on a LAN in XP. This particular bug has to deal with a LAN game when your playing with a few friends who have thier computers over not over the internet. The general feel I get around here is that if you want to play TCP on the internet then your out of luck. Also CTP has a problem with broadband connections in my experience when you click on Internet is says 'please dial up to the internet'.

No that has to do with in the properties of your ISP make sure broadband users have "NEVER DIAL A CONNECTION" clicked or checked..
