Capital Defensive Bonus Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

I've always noticed that the capital always shows a 'city' icon when it is a town, and a 'metropolis' icon when it is a city. My question, though, is whether that has any effect on the defensive bonus of units stationed there. My guess is that when the capital is a town, it gets the defensive bonus of a city, and when it is a city, it gets the bonus of a metropolis. Is this right?

The capital does get a defence bonus. It should continue after it becomes a metro as well.

Browse Apolyton AD-FREE

I've not done any rigorous testing, but it's always seemed to me the extra size of the Capital is purely cosmetic ...

NYE: Have you done any testing confirming this extra defense bonus?

He doesn't need to, the defence bonuses have been thoroughly catalogued.

The levels are:

None
Town with walls or City (50%)
Metropolis. (100%)

The bonuses stack additively with any others.

No I haven't. I have read about it though, from time to time. Just not able to find a link easily at the moment.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I think Catt did some testing on this IIRC.

He conclusion was that there was a bonus increase indeed, again IIRC, I'm pretty certain of the latter though.

DrSpike: The question was if the capital got an extra bonus, as suggested by the "big" graphics.

alva: Thanx. I'll have to do some checking around, then.

Yes, and IIRC one would apply those figures I gave to what the graphics show the capital to be. Since someone had already made the second point, I was just adding the finishing touches and providing the numbers for anyone that wanted them.

Thats interesting, In my Mod 7 ages of man I Changed the Palace to give land, sea and air defence bonuses. I wonder if the original also gives defence for naval etc defence.
One 'problem' making the palace have citywall ability is that it Can be destroyed with an accurate Bombard! Maybe I can remove the citywall defence and leave the air defence which can be quite useful.

It makes building the palace in a important strategic position a useful tactic, as its city defence makes it far harder to conquer.
Perhaps I'll make the forbidden palace have a City wall bonus to give it more use (its changed in conquests).

I don't remember testing it and I don't know the answer either! But with a poor memory, I certainly could have tested it and forgotten all about it

I just did a little test, sending 250 of my regular Warriors against 250 (unfortified) AI ones inside their capital.

122 (48.8%) of my Warriors survived; for no extra defense bonus one'd expect 114 (45,6%), and for a +50% bonus 73 (29.1%).

This strongly suggest there's, in fact, no extra defense bonus for capitals.

Edit: Corrected a couple percentages.

You can always SET the palace to give a defense bonus in the Editor. Mine has 20% (based on Rhye's of Civilization mod).

At least in PTW, that triggers a bug that allows you to destroy the Palace with bombardment. Anyone know if that's still the case in C3C?

One of the SOTDs over on CivFanatics was a picture of someone destroying an AI palace with a catapult. This bug is associated with the 1.22 patch, I think.
