Seriously, democracy will fail if this keeps up.

I think there should be 3 or more parties with equal power, equal chance at winning.

Republicans = 25%
Democrats = 25%
Independents = 25%
Greens = 25%

somethin like that

So we'd have more choices of candidates, rather than be stuck with two piss-poor candidates.

I have actually put a lot of thought into your question and I honestly just don't know. Is there a democrat out there that is for less taxes, less spending, strong national defense, creating economic opportunity, real educational reform, strong alliances with our allies, and yet willing to take unilateral action if needed...Is there one who will surround themselves with strong people of conviction with strong moral fortitude? I don't know, but I would like to.

Lets give you this scenerio:

Someone is out on patrol-a firefight starts. During it, an enemy grenade goes off and someone gets hit by shrapnel in the leg-it goes in and is painful. Guy is taken out-in the hospital they see the piece is in there but not deep-they take it out. Three days later the guy is back on his feet. 1 purple heart. Then on the first day back a mortar round hits his base-he gets a piece of shrapnel again, this time lets say in the arm. back to the hospital-another purple heart.

IN less that a week, 2 purple hearts. Yeah, the guy must be up to no good. And those wounds were mere paper cuts!

as I said, I call BS on BK.

You admit that the wounds did not incapacitate Kerry. You admit that Kerry recieved 3 purple hearts from all of these wounds, none which injured him severely, in less than a year, the precise number required for him to go home from the war.

Can you tell me how many other servicemen had a similar situation to Kerry?

I call BS on Kerry's 'scenario'. It's like his dog that got launched from one boat to another.

ARRGH! What ****ing scenerio! The army gave him the medals, he did not give them himself!

Just becuase you incorrectly believed purple hearts are only given for very serious and incapacitating injuries means nothing more than you were wrong!

His service record is with the navy-they gave him a Silver Star, which means a hell of a lot.

What you think is as always irrelevant! Unless you can show some evidence to discredit the circumstances under which he got his three purple hearts, you are spewing BS without backing.

Kenobi, I agree that Kerry didn't deserve the purple heart medals.

He should have been awarded medals, yes, but ones of far less importance and honor.

Purple hearts are for men who do extraordinary deeds, go far above the call of duty, etc.

In short, what Kerry did wasn't extraordinary. The purple hearts should have been awarded to heroes like Forrest Gump (Not a real life character, but I mean people that does what Gump did in the movie). Forrest Gump hauled his squad one by one to safety through enemy fire. That kind of heroism is far beyond Kerry, and that type of heroism deserves purple hearts.

If Kerry recieved three purple hearts for minor deeds, I demand my grandfather be given purple hearts simply for being wounded in Vietnam.

I did a bit of googling on the question of how one "earns" a purple heart, mostly because my grandfather received one for being shot in the ankle way back in the days of yore. I figured that he might be turning in his grave if he knew that somebody could get a purple heart for getting a paper cut. However, such is not the case, and he can continue his eternal slumber in peace.

quote:
The fourth link that I turned up on Google. The first link was not as complete. So sue me.
(1) A Purple Heart is authorized for the first wound suffered under conditions indicated above, but for each subsequent award an Oak Leaf Cluster will be awarded to be worn on the medal or ribbon. Not more than one award will be made for more than one wound or injury received at the same instant or from the same missile, force, explosion, or agent.

(3) When contemplating an award of this decoration, the key issue that commanders must take into consideration is the degree to which the enemy caused the injury. The fact that the proposed recipient was participating in direct or indirect combat operations is a necessary prerequisite, but is not sole justification for award.

In other words, paper cuts would probably not qualify one for the purple heart.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I thought Purple Hearts were the highest medal (just below the Congressional Medal of Honor)? I mean, I remember reading somewhere that Purple Hearts are one of the most respected medals to be given out.

No. The silver and bronze stars are above-which are awarded for bravery or distinction in action.

I a unsure what other medals are available, or if there ever was a "gold" star.
