In The Jesus Incident, which provided clear inspiration for this game, the kelp are actually similar to SMAC's fungus - the avatar of a greater sentience, planetwide.

A good read.

Jamski, are they usually found in the produce section? Guess I'll have to start keeping an eye out.

Alinestra, Frank Herbert's books are terrific read . I've not given his son Brian a chance yet although - any good? That is, if you have sampled his works.

Depends on the shop/country you live in. I find it in the big salad fridges in the supermarket.

Brian Herbert is a diabollically bad author, unless you are a HUGE cliche fan.

Avoid.

Concerning the thread title:
Do they have kelp in the hell?
I doubt, because hell is said to be hot and as such above the boiling point of water which makes kelp growth a bit difficult.

OTOH, if someone in the hell really wants to eat kelp, he's in a bad position which seems to be normal for hell.

Now I like seafood, even kelp in a japanese stylee, but kelp farms always remind me of the lyric from Bob Dylan's "Sara":

"Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore.
You always responded when I needed your help,
You gimme a map and a key to your door."

That is terrible, and doesn't even make sense. The beach is deserted except for some kelp? Is the kelp sentient or what? I guess he really couldn't come up with anotherword to rhyme with "help"

But kinda appropriate for SMAC I think (especially if the kelp IS sentient).

FH had his moments - about 6 months sometime in the '70s. But his son? Just don't go there.

I don't think anyone eats fungus unless they are feeling suicidal. Afterall, the inevitable chemical and structural differences from a billion years of evolution in an alien environment render the native plant life highly poisonous to humans. Juicy, ripe grenade fruits may look appealing, but a mouthful of organonitrates will certainly change your mind in a hurry.

Most edible nutrients come from organic material that has been processed into nutrient paste from latter-21st century machinery.

The fungus boy faction, on the other hand, will make the raw fungus into an inhalant for it's dream-inducing narcotic properties and because their doctrine demands it.

Of course, I learned all this when I took my family to Gaia's High Garden. A really interesting tour program was running on one of the datalinks there.

On an edit: I'd just like to mention I've always liked the taste of algae (fishfood) since I was a tott. Gives me the wind, though
