Civ III launch problems Support Apolyton buy from Amazon

OK, here is a test for all you Civ III gurus. I have an original copy of Civ III. I have installed it on a Dell GX 260 w/a 2.8Ghz processor and 512mb of memory. 90% of the time when I attempt to run the game with the CD in the drive Civilization3.exe hangs. I get a hungapp error and Windows prompts me to send an error report to MS. I have updated the ATI drivers as well as verify that the SB Live! drivers. Is there something I am missing. I have also removed the .bik files from the Movie folder per Atari's support site.

Well I can not say anything for sure, but here is what happened to me.

I have a new rig last year. It was a P-IV 3.066GH with 1GN mem and 9800 PRO on XP PRO. I have many problems with CivIII crashing at various stages wiht the same msg.

I spend months doing everything nd workign with their support. We turned of sound, disabled memory and so on. It never went away. I finaly replaced the motherborad with a better one and replaced the mem. I replaced the video with the same brand earlier and it did nothing. The MB + mem swap worked. I concluded it was somethig about the MB. I have not had any more crashes with CivIII or PTW or C3C.

Support Apolyton, buy Call to Power 2

Thanks for the reply. I found out some additional information about my problem yesterday. If I run the release version with a NO-CD version of the Civ3.exe I have no problems. I also tried to run it by using a mounted CD image and that too failed. I have an original CD but for some reason on this system I have problems. It does seem to be related to CD access.

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization III: Complete

FYI I was using Alcohol120, but it made no difference, if I reinstalled using the CD's only.

Working with the support center, I installed so many times. Each new tactic they suggsted required a new install.
