Once the first bit of the word is unraveled, you can search a physical dictionary for possibilities.

Other than that, you need a stroke of good fortune to catch the right time to make a guess.

Not necessarily... I only use it to check the spelling of my guesses and to search for interesting words when I win. I'll admit that I stumbled across 'prophylaxis' when looking for something else, tho.

I was searching online, and found 'prophylactic' but the entry didn't mention the derivative 'prophylaxis'. A proper dictionary would be more likely to have told me that, I imagine.

I would have to say I find all searching to be against the spirit of the game. It's the same as googling the clues in 'name the game'. Your wits should be the only resource.
