Someone mentioned a military connection. I've read my share of Mika Waltari's novels that are set in ancient Rome, and a purple or red horizontal line in one's white toga signified a military officer (a knight?) of some kind, though I forget the details.

I have hard time deciding whether it's the legionnary or the prefect, though. I'd imagine that the praetorian prefect would be an officer whereas a legionnary like alva is just a grunt. Hence, my vote goes to General Ludd.
