We're the worst country in the western world for violent crime (per head), maybe thats the reason why

Or maybe thats just me being cynical because I live in Birmingham! Anyway, that 378 figure you mention is way higher than the 224 for the Civ map previously mentioned, which I believe was the original point of this

Then I'll point out that Bangladesh's got 905 inhabitants per square km.

There are even higher counts, but that's mostly city-states. I think Monaco tops the league at 16,410.

That's what we were just discussing. It's called ICS, short for infinite city sprawl. Basically, you put cities in this order XCXCX where "C" is a city and "X" is an empty tile. This is the same whether you are going E/W or N/S (at least by my understanding of directions in Civ).

The reason for this is simple. 90% of the game is lost or won before the industrial revoltution. Before sanitation, you cannot grow beyond size 12 (save for a special wonder or two). So, by placing cities one square apart, you make the most of the map for the early ages (ancient, midieval) and can achieve much greater power than if your cities were spaced loosely, XXCXXCXX, or OPC (optimal city placement).

There are a several big advantages to ICS. One of the major ones is corruption. One of the biggest factors in corruption is distance from capitol. Thus, the more cities you can keep close to your captial, the better off you are. Another is the fact that by the middle ages, it's easy to get 75-100 cities on a large map, with almost all of them between sizes 6 and 12. That kind of population results in a lot more gold, technology, etc. With a loose city placement, you can only get about half that many cities, but the city sizes will remain the same, due to lack of sanitation.

Well, do a search on ICS. I'm sure you can come up with a lot more, and some better, explanations of this powerfull city placement,

Dan O.

Hold up there, those stats given for England were in persons per square kilometer. I gave stats in persons per square mile.

So, England is quite dense because in persons per sqauare kilometer, Illinois is only 79.4!

Just thought we'd all start talking in the same units,

Put an end to popups!

I just can't bring myself to ICS.

I'm a weird player. I always try to play the game the way it was intended. I rarely if ever use exploits (aside from reloading ). I like to place my cities on rivers, or near bonus squares or resources.

But perhaps I should try this. maybe I can compete better at the higher levels.

Unless you are talking about Analyzing California's population density.

Death Valley and Mojave National preserve should ensure their population density remains low. But they are the most populous state in the U.S...

Okay, I just googled it, and couldn't find an average for the whole US, but I found one for my state, Illinois. The average for Illinois is 205.6 persons per square mile.

Dan O.

Yeah but the area you control in game is only about 2/3 the size of Illinois!

Your PD is probably about right for a well-developed country of moderate size with a reaonably advanced infrastructure (say France or Italy).

USA had a PD of 30.7/sq. km in 2003 (source CIA World Factbook)

First off, the OT - topic.

quote:

I just did a quick calculation on the population and land area. It seems that I have 224.5 people per square mile. That's quite a number considering what the average is for the USA.

That works out to be ~87.7 people per sq km - had to convert - sorry, everyone uses km these days!

That means you had a comparable pop density to Dominica or Turkey, which are 107th and 108th on the world ranking (1999 figures). Source is here. The US is 172nd out of 239 states and island territories on this list, so not much of a good comparison really.

Secondly, the On Topic bit.

Using the Civ Calculator, an Elite Longbowman in those circumstances had a 7.5% chance of winning. Of course the exact odds depend on the exact strength of your Infantry that each Longbowman faced, but assuming (as an upper limit on their chances) your Infantry was reduced to 1 hp first time, then promoted, then promoted again at 1hp left, then defended the rest of the 25 LBs at 1hp left, the chances of your victory were = about 8.3 x 10^-6 %.

If your Infantry defended with no hp loss at all the whole time to Regular Longbowmen (an upper limit on YOUR chances), the chances were = 94.5%. Thus there was a very good chance of you achieving this outcome, especially since the most probable outcome each time was for your Infantry to win with no hp loss.

No apologies for not doing the stats fully - this will do, and if you ARE offended by the crudeness of these estimates, why are you wanting to do the stats exactly anyway?

Never heared of ICS before... maybe I'le give it a whack in my next game. I usually play on regent, and I find that I am always behind for the ancient age and the first 2 thirds of the medival age, and then I kick ass....

As for the 25 bowmen.... 25,000 bowmen against 1000 machine gunners on a hilltop sounds like a realistic outcome.

Hey .... whats everyone's vote on ICS? Does it work well or is it troublesome to get to all the resources you want? Just figured I see what the majority thinks. I've never heard of it before this thread. Sounds interesting... maybe worth the try?

As is well known, Spearmen are excellent tankbusters. Since Knights are heavily armoured, the same tactics work against them.

I can understand a wall of spears being effective against a cavalry charge (try it in total war, you'll maul them from the rear but attacking from the front hurts). However I can't see them doing any more to a tank (or even a humvee!) than putting a nasty scratch in the paintwork.

The spearmen run up to the tank a jab their spears into the nooks and cranies.

Really

If Roman spearmen had carried hand grenades Europe as we know it today would never have existed.

Seriously though, I pay for unit upgrades at points during the game (usually spearmen right through to Mech). No upgrade equals no grenades.
