Well im devistated by what tips u have told me lol. I guess I have a very different way of building empires than u guys. The citys that are scattered are in stratigic locations + near needed tiles for food and money.
I know what u mean about making a military from the start i did this once or twice but ended up neglecting tecnology as a result falling behind but the wars were spectacular.
The game im in now would be alot different if I had been able to ge6t my hands on iron and horses but none around just bad luck I guess.
The great libary isnt that good that u can put tec to 0% research or is it thought it only gave 2 free tecs it dont research them does it?????????????

Just make a game as you normally do it. Post the start of the game here or email it to me vmxa(at)sbcglobal(dot)net.
You play the first 40 turns and so will I. I will make a log of my turns and we can compare what was done.
Then you can incorporate any concepts that make sense to you.
At that point we can either pick up from where you are, using your save or you can start over with any chances you think are valuable.
Eventually you get the save to the first 40 turns and we then do another round. rinse and repeat until you are seeing things are improving or hopeless.
This can be done either privately or here, your choice. I think once you see the power of workers and camps/pumps you will be off and running, kicking the AI's butt.

Looks like you've gotten some help now, but I'll post my tip to you as I thought of it when starting to read this thread:
If you're behind in military, but have a potential enemy close to your borders, it could be good to focus your military at those border cities and try to place them "behind" rivers and/ or on hills. Build walls and barracks in them and have some attackers there as well as a good defence force. If you'll get attacked, you can encounter invading forces from your cities and with good defence you can weaken your enemy with minimum losses. If the AI continues, it will fall behind wasting it's resources on military (but remember; there are no winners in wars, only a grade in loosing)

i dont think too many peeps would agree with u there, i certainly dont. mabey as a builder its slightly true, but only to an extent
wars are the only way to increase ur land base once rexing is done. land is definately the most precious commidity out there, as everything else depends on it (food, shields, commerce, luxaries and resources all and land based variables)
well lux and reasources can be traded for, but at a cost to you)
as a former total builder turned opurtunists warmonger/goal orientated builder i cant recomend war enuf. as a human player this is where our biggest advantage over the AI is. its realitivly easy to defeat an AI with a military much bigger than yours.

Some thoughts, w/o looking at your game:
City walls are, for the most part, a waste. I only will put them in border towns that do not have fresh water access (the ones with fresh water will grow to size7 and thus get the 50% defense bonus anyway).
Too many defensive units (spearmen) is a common rookie mistake. I certainly did that at one point, and even now I probably build too many compared to the best players. Another mistake is keeping units in interior cities when using republic or democracy - those governments do not allow for military police to help keep your cities content, so a spearman fortified in a core cities surrounded by other cities of yours is doing exactly nothing for you.
City spacing... it can be tough to accept, but spreading your cities out so there is no overlap is going to cost you. This is because you cannot use more than 12 tiles until hospitals... at which point a huge portion of the game (and the most important part) has already been played. I typically compromise and use a CxxxC pattern. Only occasionally will I drop to CxxC.
Another common mistake is failure to build enough workers. This often results from two things: 1) fear of disorder; and 2) not enough population growth. 1 is dealt with by using the luxury slider - it's better to have citizens working tiles (so long as those tiles are developed) and paying for luxury spending than not, most of the time. In core cities, anyway. It's different out on the edges, where corruption eats your commerce. 2 is all about recognizing that pop (and thus food) is power. I suggest checking out the link Theseus provided. Look for stuff about the use of granaries to create settler and worker "pumps."
Final tip: get your forbidden palace up early. It helps to have a really good spot for it, but it's better to build it in a so-so spot early than to wait too long for that optimal place. Building the FP early in a city relatively close to your capital means that you won't have an optimal late-game empire (unless you use communism, which rocks now), but it will provide a significant boost early, when it counts the most.

I think I was thinking more of real life maybe, but also if the AI tries it on you and you have a situation as I described, you will loose too as your border cities will suffer and maybe you'll experience war weariness
