I have voted banana. This means I have no idea which direction to explore in and believe our wise consul's coin is luckier than mine. Perhaps we could head in the direction that the last sighted vessel appeared to come from - whichever that was.

I suppose it depends on whether we want to find:
a) virgin territory on which we can settle
b) occupied territory that we can conquer
c) cities that we can trade with.
The problem with heading in the opposite direction to the suspected land is that it could be a much longer journey with no guarantee that any land we find will be un-occupied.
But this citizen is happy to leave the decision to our wise consul.

In anycase, it looks as if the poll will give the consul complete freedom.

Exploring "all the squares" would indeed be inefficient (no need to adjust the path of the boat to explore one or two blackened squares), but what would truly be inefficient would be to move in a given direction (south for example) for 20 squares before finding land, landing our "explorers" there, and settling our second city, and discovering later that there was a land mass 10 squares away. One point we in agreement on, is that we "want a place to build a few cities", the question is, what is the quickest way to find that land mass. Another point we are in agreement on is that we need to explore (no xenophobs in this game ). Perhaps our most efficient search pattern would involve the fact that we know there is no land within ?7? squares, so if we do search in a circular pattern, that we start out 7-10 squares away??
* Sparrowhawk Minister of Science and Exploration...opps, maybe scratch that last part
