That second screen looks pretty useless so far.

actually that does look pretty cool, as long as its implemented well...I don't want games to use it but it feel like it was just tacked on.

Those sound like the press release numbers from either Sony or Nintendo, no? The ones where "sold" means "shipped to retailers" for Sony or Nintendo's numbers, and the other numbers they cherry-pick from anaylsts who low-ball estimations...
What's interesting is the current sales momentum: http://bink.nu/DesktopModules/Artic...?ArticleID=1734
quote: MICROSOFT'S Xbox price cut at AU$249 has appeared to pay off, with the company claiming its first ever weekly sales overreaching its rival Sony PlayStation 2.
2 weeks ago Xbox took 50 per cent of the "next generation" console market, 15 per cent ahead of PlayStation2. Nintendo's GameCube accounted for 7 per cent of sales. The Xbox win has been a long time coming, with the PlayStation 2 and Xbox consoles fighting a pitched battle for more than two years.
Approximately 500,000 Xbox consoles have been sold in Australia, Microsoft said. However, with more than one million sold PlayStation 2's sold locally, Microsoft has conceded that it will probably never match the PlayStation 2's large lead in overall console numbers. |
Xboxes are selling faster than PS2s, and both are selling way faster than Gamecubes.

quote: It's annoying to have to turn away from the gameplay just to see the map. |
Perhaps, but carrying around *a second screen* just to get rid of that annoyance....Its a bit overkill, dont you think?
quote: Second, it's only going to be $150! Which is only $50 greater than a GBA, |
What can I get for $150?
I can get a DVD-RW drive, I can get 2 more 30 GB harddrives, I can get a new video card, I can get 5 $30 games (PC or Gameboy), I can eat out at the most expensive resturtant in town 3 times, I can go to the movies 6 times, I can pay nearly 1/7th of my rent, I could buy over 700 packs of noodles....
quote: and of course the DS will be able to play 64 bit games (like from Nintendo 64, etc) |
But the thing is that the N64 didn't really have a huge selection of good games.
Perfect Dark, Goldeneye maybe, but not only did the both have more controls than the DS allows anbd not only are they bigger than GBA cartridges, but they already pushed the N64 to its limits. They'd probably fry the DS.
And, of course, there is the issue of batterly life: Not only are you powering two screens, one of them is a touch screen. And if you have to play in the dark, your turning on two screens thus eating away at your battery power even more.
Also, that makes even more issues with the touch screen. Not only do you have to pack around your GBADS *and* your games, but you have to bring that damn stylus with you. Just more to track.
Of course, you could touch the screen, but that leaves nasty fingerprints.
I also hear theres going to be built in wireless connectivity as well as a microphone...Remember my earlier point about eating away at battery power?
My main beef is with the two screens though. Yeah, its nice to have one where you can look at your map....OK.
But why have it two seperate screens? Why not have it one big screen with the lower part devoted to that? Then, for games that won't utilise it, they have more space to work with, or more stuff to do.
Its just kind of cubersome to have this other screen there that may not even be used.

Not really. It's a nice feature to have, IMO (especially for multiplayer). And it isn't just for a map, though it will be used a lot for that. It can be used for games which might need a stylus or games which would be better with a split screen.

But can you get a comparable portable game system? That is what the DS is competing with.
quote: they already pushed the N64 to its limits. They'd probably fry the DS. |
Actually the DS's capabilities are in between the N64 and Gamecube. Look at the new Metroid game coming out (based on the Gamecube Metroid game).

Compared to the PSP (ie, its competition) it'll probably eat up LESS battery power than the large screened Playstation competitor.
quote: Mark my words -- the battery life on this thing will be atrocious. Does Nintendo understand why people like handhelds? Hint: it has to do with using it on the go! |
Like I said, as long as the battery life is better than the PSP, they are ok.
---
In the end, the DS has to be compared to the PSX, because that is all there is in the market. Also the DS is backwards compatible with all other Gameboy games. The PSX will attempt to convert a lot of the PS1 games for their system.

I'm assuming by PSX you mean PSP, since PSX is the PS1.
And powering too smaller displays takes a lot more than a single larger display, by virtue of having twice as many lights. Almost ALL display power is sucked up by the backlight, and if you've got one backlight using ~20% more power to cover a larger screen area, it's more effective than having an entirely new backlight resulting in 100% more power.
Other concerns: touchscreens scratch, stylus' are lost, and oils from the fingers can destroy them. Guaranteed, parents are NOT going to like buying their kids something for $150 if it's so easily broken.
It's a stupid idea all around. Not only will they cost a fortune to make, they're trying to compete with Sony. Gaming devices will become something of a fashion accessory and a statement, much like the iPod craze today. If people have a choice between the console maker who tried a purple cube with a gay plumber running around spraying water everywhere, or the sleak black console and brand name with a game involving murdering prostitutes for money, which do you think most kids will go for?
