OK, please don't scream at me too hard if this isn't technically feasable (or will slow down the site too much):
When you post, can't the site check if the previous post was also made by you, and if so, check to see if the previous post is the exactly the same as the one you just posted.

I think I only double posted once when flood control was started. I think I just kept hitting submit even after the time limit because of typical apolyton slow down. I can't see this as a problem. But impatient people like me just got to get their posts in

Have you ever had the problem where sometimes in Windoze, you click something and sort of move the mouse off the thing in the process - so that the thing doesn't actually get pressed? Or sometimes you click the "submit" button right at the edge?
Anyway, the end result is that at the bottom of the screen it doesn't say that the posting.cgi (or whatever) page is being loaded - which it sometimes does even when the post is actually being posted. So I can't tell whether the post has been made or not...
edit: tell me if this post doesn't make sense.

If you're on Windows, I believe an hourglass should appear next to your cursor (even briefly) if you've activated the submit feature, whereas if you missed the submit button you wouldn't see an hourglass.
Strangely enough, I don't think a double post has happened to me more than once in the close to two years I've been posting here. So it's a bit of a mystery why some people seem to have such a hard time avoiding them.
I think ColdWizard's advice of only hitting the submit button once is the best advice for this problem anyone could come up with.

of course, but in those instances the little blue progress bar doesn't show up and the stupid M$ icon in the corner doesn't rotate (btw i use IE 5)

Under Netscape, when you click the "submit" button, the button disables itself while the post is being sent. With Internet Exploder, this doesn't happen. Instead, multiple clicks means multiple posts.

But if you're looking away at the moment of clicking (yes, I know it sounds trivial) like I mostly am (am reading the post for errors to edit), then you miss the hourglass.

But this sort of thing still can't be fixed by my orig suggestion.
