Are you sure socialist Canada would be ready for these radical ideas? |
A simple income tax system is more of a left wing idea. The people who would oppose it the most are corporate execs.
A lot of stuff that Hong Kong does should be avoided like the plague. There are no competition laws so cartels exist in most of the local industries. Our streets are jammed with tree-quarter empty buses because there are three bus companies, plus independent minibuses.
On the other hand, the simple tax system makes it easy for unemployed people to start their own companies. Just get a licence, buy some stock and rent store space. Most people do their own accounting books. Try doing that in Canada. As an NDPer, one of Canada's biggest problems is its high unemployment rates and people trapped in the poverty circle. They'd be better off if they could start their own business. It's not that simple, but reducing the barriers is better than raising them.

Most people who open a small business do not become filthy rich.
The underlying belief of the NDP is to ensure all Canadians have a good lifestyle and to eliminate poverty. If helping people start a business helps achieve this goal then it should be done.

Ottawa making changes to gun registry
Last Updated Thu, 20 May 2004 15:45:29
OTTAWA - The federal government has announced changes to its controversial gun registry, just days before an expected election call.
"Canadians have made it clear that they want a system of gun control that focuses on the criminal use of firearms," Deputy Prime Minister Anne McLellan said Thursday. "We believe that these changes will do that."
The Liberals announced an end to fees for registering guns and transferring their ownership, though the change won't be retroactive.
And contrary to some reports, it will still be a criminal offence not to register your gun.
The package will also include stronger measures to help law enforcement agencies deal with gun crime and smuggling. Criminal Code penalties for possession of loaded handguns in public places will be beefed up.
And included in the announcement is a plan to support police with three new ballistic information systems to match bullets with weapons.
The new systems will be located in Halifax, Regina and Vancouver. Similar systems already exist in Montreal, Toronto and Ottawa.
The gun registry program has come under fire for its spiralling cost overruns, expected to reach $1 billion by 2005.
When first announced by Ottawa in 1995, it was estimated the registry would cost taxpayers a maximum of $2 million, with most of the estimated $119 million cost expected to be recovered by registration fees.
Treasury Board President Reg Alcock said costs for the registry are being brought under control. He said the annual cost to taxpayers peaked at $48 million in the 2001/02 fiscal year, but it's now down to $33 million.
Alcock announced a cap of $25 million per year on the amount Ottawa will contribute to the registry.
The changes follow a three-month national review by Liberal cabinet minister Albina Guarnieri.
