It's tough to pick through what is true and not from a complete outsider's perspective.
I take a look back at the early 1900s in the US where the Taft and Roosevelt trust-busters started hacking away against the corporates as laying a good foundation for our economy and our democracy. It would be naive to think that this was done for reasons other than the Robber Barrons' fortunes were influencing the political process to an inordinate degree. What would have happened if the Robber Barrons had tried to blackmail the government by implicitly threatening the overall economy? Wouldn't the government be correct to call the bluff by closing the bastards down?
Of course, by that time the US had a several hundred year old tradition of representative government and Russia only has 10-15 very imperfect years of it. Also, busting trusts is different than what is happening in Russia.
I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt here...
