It's an awesome car.

Though the engine is bigger here, 2.3L w/ 160hp in the GT trim I have, the euro version has a 2.0L as the biggest w/ 148hp (base GS model here).

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

I don't consider 2.3L to be a big engine. I consider it moderate.

4L Jeeps...those are big engines. And they're like 40 more hp than what I have. Gotta love American engineering.

Actually, 2.3L for a four banger is pretty big - needlessly big, I'd say. I'm rather surprised Mazda would use such an engine - maybe something developed for their Ford parent?

Still, I quite like the new Mazda 3's. Good entry level car.

It's the same engine that will be used in the new european Ford Focus (not the North American crap), and in Volvo's new S40. It's entirely Mazda-designed, though.

Still puts it near the top end of 4 cylinder engine sizes, which surprises me somewhat.

And Volvo must be strapping a turbocharger on it, I'm guessing. The current S40 has a 1.9L turbo that puts out 170 hp. I don't think they'll be putting in a less powerful engine into the new one.

Put an end to popups!

Yeah, the Volvo will have a turbo. The same engine as the upcoming Mazdaspeed 3.

I'm getting a car this summer -- possibly a 2003 Honda Civic hybrid. That should help alleviate my costs for gasoline.

It will cost you 10 years to recouperate the price premium in gas savings @ $2/gallon over a regular Civic.

Critics point out that after paying the extra cash for one, say a $2,500 premium for a hybrid Civic, it will take about a decade to recoup that amount at the pump (at 15,000 miles a year and with gas at $2 per gal.). They claim that if fuel economy becomes an even more important consideration, there are already plenty of fuel-efficient cars and smaller SUVs that are less complex and easier to fix than hybrids.

Well, you see, in Israel, a new car costs 30-40k USD due to taxation, so it's a bit different over here.

But those are diesel.

Get a VW Jetta TDI. Diesel isn't always the easiest to find, but man those cars get amazing milage. They managed to fix most of the annoying bugs associated with diesel too - although they still have noticably less power than they're gas counterparts (not nearly as bad as it used to be, though).
