Noosland military - Special Forces Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

Noosland's military has an unconventional structure. Part of the reason is there is a very large component of special forces.

Nooslandian special forces are extensively trained units that excel in surgical strikes, raids, rescues and retrivals, and other small scale unit actions. They have always aimed to be the best in the region, and the training has been continually reviewed and improved to this end.

The Guardsmen - the Guardsmen is a special branch of the special forces extensively trained to protect prominent figures in the country, including political leaders and important scientists.

Blacklance Knights - Blacklance Knights is a very small and highly scretive special forces group. Very little is known about them.

Alpha Teams - consisted of the best members from other special forces, Alpha Teams are equipped with the best and most advanced devices available. Elite among the elites, they tackle the most important and difficult missions.

Wave Riders - with members handpicked from the marines, Wave Riders are particularly suitable to perform missions on the high seas or along coastal regions.

Nooslandians - the largest special forces group, Nooslandians closely coorporate with other regular forces, spearheading their operations. Nooslandians rarely attempt independent missions.

Ghostlight - Ghostlight specialises in recon and target acquisition missions.

Blue Caps - the Blue Caps is the largest non-specialist special forces group that performs independent missions.

This is from the FCL/Azan OoC thread:

Jonchastan was an oil-rich, despotic Emirate until 30 years ago, when a revolution overthrew the Emir and replaced his regime with radically democratic, socialist society.

Since most of Jonchastan's wealth has been focused on improving people's lives, most of the military equipment dates from the Emir's regime - think hi-tech, hi-quality mid-seventies era weaponry - and is only slowly being replaced (or refitted) with modern technology.

The entire Jonchastan Navy, as posted in the military hardware thread, consists of only 20 combat vessels, all of which are modeled on RL ships launched in the 1970s and early 1980s. There is talk of Jonchastan expanding its naval strength to match its political presence in the region (especially now that Jonchastan's growing population and improved economy make it a feasible option).

Jonchastan's military, though small, is highly trained, efficient, professional and democratic. All officers are elected. This caused problems early on in the post-revolutionary period, but has since sorted itself out.

The active forces, known as the Jonchastan Militia, are 8 divisions strong. The 1st (airborne) and 2nd (infantry) Divisions are holding fortified postions in Azan in (or near ) New Aurora. The 3rd (infantry) and 8th (armoured) divisions are en route to Azan (actually, they should be disembarking at New Aurora by now). The 5th (marine) division is in Azan's Western Isles, and the 4th, 6th and 7th (all infantry) are back in Jonchastan.

In addition, there are about 10 division worth of reserves - the Jonchastan Guard - that can be called up for the national defence of Jonchastan.

Jonchastan doesn't have much of an airforce to speak of - 2 squadrons of fighters, tops - although the level of logistical support (C-130s and the like) is relatively strong.

Full PM-box? Change here!

Well, here's the post from the OOC thread:

quote:
I consider Centralis to be a society very oriented towards specialization and doing things by co-operation; people tend to grow up working in networks, and as such become very good at it, but they tend not to do so well on their own.

(People in some jobs have to be good at it, and they learn to be, but they're the exceptions, not the rule)

The main military implication of this is that the Centralis military can be frighteningly efficient when fully co-ordinated - which, when the enemy doesn't go to great lengths to prevent it, is most of the time - but units tend not to do so well when cut off one another, and individual soldiers even less so. Special ops troops are better off in this regard, but even then, they don't work as well alone as someone from elsewhere might.

As for equipment, training, and so on - as you migh expect, given the above, communications, satellite imaging and recon, and other such technologies tend to be very sophisticated, to the point where the military largely relies on them. Weapons tend to be what you would expect from an early 21st century nation (perhaps a couple of years more advanced than the present day), while training is extensive but specialized; tank drivers are very good at diving tanks, but horrible at being infantry, etc. There is a certain amount of redundancy (everyone in a unit has some training in what everyone else does, although only very basic stuff), but outside the unit level, nobody is very experienced at doing stuff outside their role.

As for the makeup of the miltiary:

The air force and army tend to predominate, with the navy taking a secondary role; it's priamry function is to move troops to other countries and support them when they get there, along with other jobs like protecting civilian shipping, etc.

The air force and the army tend to work together very closely, to the point where they're virtually the same entity, and the basic philosophy is identical - victory through overwhelming firepower. Precision is emplyoed when there is a risk of civilian casualties, to minimize them, but when there are no civilians around, the favoured tactic is simply to bury the enemy through sheer weight of fire.

To achieve this, the Centralis military puts a lot of emphasis on heavy weapons - artillery, FAEs, tank units, and so on. The infantry, while competent enough, tend to be used to occupy a position that has already been largely hammered into the ground. They tend not to do so well against fully prepared defensive positions, especially without armour or air support.

For situations in which surgical strikes are required, Centralis does have a number of extremely highly-trained elite units, but there aren't too many of them, and they're very valuable, so they aren't risked on anything but important missions. The degree of effor tthat has to be put into producing a fully trained special ops trooper means that the Centralis military is often prepared to lose a great many ordinary soldiers in order to avoid losing a handful of special operatives - an attitude which causes some resentment among the ordinary troops, although this tends to be muted by some of the amazing things the special forces can achieve when they're actually deployed.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

My stuff is historically more qualitative than quantitative in its approach, but I'll do my best. I welcome comments if you think you know better than me (or even if you don't).

* * *

quote:

Karakas' soldiers fight hard and with devotion - but their training is not of a standard that would be considered acceptable in the top military powers. They can also lose their discipline at times.

During the cold war with Kyralia, the army, navy, and air force were set up with the intention of fighting Kyralia. That means ships and heavy bombers suitable for offense just offshore, and marine landing and commando combat training for the infantry. As a result, that kind of capability is strong, but mobile combat skills and naval power projection are lacking.

This is the description of the offensive army from the Frankychanland / Azan Discussion Thread. Karakan special forces and National Guard are somewhat better. And now that Kyralia and the mainland have been re-unified, priorities should shift to improve power projection, especially in the navy. (Consider it a process under way.)

Army

11 Infantry divisions and 5 mechanized infantry divisions. Equipment is something like mid-90s and has been maintained to a reasonable standard.

Air Force

12 air wings. Aircraft of highly varying quality. Some equipment is beginning to be outdated, including F-111 (or an equivalent if there is no F-111 in this world) bombers. Most modern aircraft is F/A-18 (or equivalent).

Navy

47 combat ships, including 4 heavy cruisers, 7 missile destroyers, and 2 battleships. Those last were previously used to patrol the strait between Kyralia and the east coast, with the role of carpet-bombing the island in the event of war, and may not continue long into the 21st century.

One priority of defense spending is ensuring a naval "kill radius" that covers at least the Marshall Islands (that were Zetaris in the previous iteration).

Strengths and Weaknesses

Training: Average

Equipment: Average

Logistics: Above average

Offensive Capabilities: Average

Defensive Capabilities: Good

Power Projection: Minimal

Special Forces: Above average

Noosland military - army Put an end to popups!

After decades of restructuring, the Nooslandian army has transformed into what we believe to be the army of the future. Our main strengths are speed, mobility, and surprise. The basic unit for the army is the squad, and is the only permanent structure in the regular force (with a few exceptions). Larger units are formed by combining squads, but these larger units are not permanent. They disband and reform after a certain period, usually 3~5 years. This structure gives the individual soldiers maximum liberty in combat situations, so our army excel in regional conflicts where the situation is fluid and battles are brief. Perhaps at the expense at large scale confrontations where the lines are relatively static and strength becomes the dominant factor.

To alleviate this situation, Noosland has a few divisions with a permanent roster. These divisions are extensively trained in defense, as we do not believe in aggressions.

Most of our divisions are "light," meaning that they have less heavy equipment (such as AFV's) than a regular mechanised infantry division, but they can deploy rapidly due to the large number of aviation assets (mainly in the form of helos). Our units rely heavily on missiles for anti-armour and anti-air defenses.

All our soldiers are equipped with GLATIIS (Global location and total information interlink system) II, a system that allows them to rapidly dispense and assemble information at real time, giving them a significant edge during any and all tactical situations.

Due to our continual investment in education and R&D, our soldiers have a very high level of education, because they need it to use the sophisticated equipment available.

Increase Your PM Length

Auldonina, has always specialised in its Navy, maintaining a large and modern fleet.

We also have an uptodat airforce but not a slarge as some other nations.

Our ground forces is small by comaprison with other nations. We keep very few infantry battalions and prefer to keep a mobile force.

We only have one corp of special forces and this is also much lower than other nations.

Put an end to popups!

Another attempt at number-crunching Ceroo's military...

Ceroo's Military Spending: Ce318 billion

*Ce = Ceroos

Where the money goes:
Personnel 36% (Armed Forces 30%, Civilian Staff 6%)
Equipment 44%
Other 20% (buildings, works, land, stores, services, etc.)

Defence Personnel:
Total: 1,521,000
Service: 1,029,000
Civilian: 492,000

Naval Service: 548,000
Officers: 69,500
Other Ranks: 478,500

Army: 212,000
Officers: 39,000
Other Ranks: 174,000

Air Force: 268,500
Officers: 55,000
Other Ranks: 213,500

Ceroo-based Civilians: 492,000
Non-Industrial: 369,000
Industrial: 123,000

*It is important to note that with the structure of the Cerooan military- naval figures will incude some army and airforce personnel who operate in a dual-capacity (these figures would NOT be shown in army or airforce figures)

Ceroo's Fleet
5, Dani'ir-Class Aircraft Carriers
1, Unclassified 'Heavy Dreadnought'
9, Endeavour-Class Dreadnoughts
20, Ceroo-Class Battleships
42, Athens-Class Cruisers
10, Shoalvik-Class Amphibious Assault Ship
55, Newport-Class Destroyers
80, Type 23 'Sao Paulo-Class' Frigates
20, Type 22 'BattleAxe-Class' Frigates
96, Heatara-Class Heavy Escorts
2, Nordi-Class Patrol Vessels
11, Castle-Class Patrol Vessels
15, River-Class Patrol Vessels

3, Star-Class Submarines
33, Vanguard-Class Submarines

15, Pacifica-Class Survey Vessels

*Fleet figures do not include various training vessels, minesweepers and minor defence vessels.

Ceroo's Army
Imperial Guard- elite troops, the Imperial Guard used to be the Emporer's personal guard, hoever the modern Imperial Guard is almost indistinguishable from the Diamond Guard
Diamond Guard- elite troops, protect governmental buildings and top facilities
Emerald Guard- heavily mechanised infantry and armour trained mainly for combat in temperate woodland or jungle environments
Saphire Guard- highly trained marines
Ruby Guard- heavily mechanised infantry and armour trained mainly for combat in temperate plains or desert environments
Topaz Guard- paratroopers, light infantry
Pearl Guard- small division, specialists in artic or high-altitude combat.
Amethyst Guard- troops which are adept to fighting in mountainous environments
Opal Guard- border guards and port controls
Crystal Guard- protect sites of historical significance

Standard equipment:
The standard issue rifle is now the SA80-C2, a Cerooan variant comprising many improvements over the SA80. The LSW, a larger version of the SA80. is also issued to every infantry section.
Also used ois the GPMG (General Purpose Machine Gun), a suppression weapon and an accurate sustained fire platform when mounted on a tripod. The tripod base includes a GPS system to allow accurate map-assisted firing out to over 1000m. This weapon is also mounted on several mobile platforms such as the Landrover and off-road quad bikes.

Numbers of troops cannot be published as numbers vary between divisions quickly, the estimated total is stated above.

Ceroo's Airforce
Aircraft in Service:
Fighters- Osprey Class, Harrier-Class (vertical take-off), F-35s
Milti-Purpose- Nimrod-Class
Bombers- B-9 Bombers
Transport- Hercules-Class Transport
Helicopters: Chinooks, Sea-Kings, Gazelle

Numbers unconfirmed...

Ceroo Orbital Navy
Since the end of Ceroo's space exploration (the expense outweighed the miniscule rewards), there have been no manned missions into orbit, however a modern system of communications (and spy) satellites is in place.

Missiles
Ceroo is capable of launching inter-continental ballistic missiles, (however these are few in number and it is rumoured that the warheads are kept seprately so an immediate launch is not possible). Ceroo has also developed 'missile-buster' and 'satellite-buster' missiles, again due to the expense these are also few in number. Most naval vessels carry Tomahawk cruise missiles, and a greater number of cheaper (but slightly inferior) Janos cruise missiles.

Obviously this list omits special forces, secret projects and newly-developed aircraft and ships that are 'unknown' at this time.
