Science: 1814 AD Get a bigger avatar today!

Our cities are now prepared to build banks (we are certain that those more interested in trade then science will be pleased ). Further to that thought, we seek the knowledge of Economics and will soon add that to our growing repertiore of knowledge. Hopefully the people will soon have us return to the more philisophical needs of the Empire.

In this regard, I ask that we again vote, and take into consideration what we have, what we need, and what we are trying to accomplish.

If we are to research Horseback Riding, it will enable us to research Polytheism or The Wheel.

If we are to research Medicine, it will allow us to research Chemistry.

If we are to research Physics, the option will remain as they are now until further knowledge is obtained.

If we are to research Theory of Gravity, we will understand why apples never fall up.

If we are to research Warrior Code, the sciences of Feudalism and Iron Working will be possible.

If you think your insight is greater then our own, then we ask that you enlighten us with your greater wisdom.

And if you are indifferent to the selections posed, then hopefully the fruits of our labour will continue to please (or not please, should the great god Banana so deem).

Put an end to popups!

As the second person to vote in this poll, as in the previous poll, I didn't want to see a tie and voted for the same as the first person who voted (Medicine).

Shite that poll was fast I was actually waiting for an explanation of what each would be aimed at getting us. I guess I could have looked last night when I was doing polls, but I didn't finish until around 4am.

+1 for Horseback Riding. Scouts to explore new lands and heading towards giving us a creditable defense.

Actually it was the same three days as most polls are.

But.......I will happily take your vote for horseback riding into consideration and any others that are voted for before our Consul plays again (or at least until he requests reports). Maybe not too democractic.......but we are a republic

Didn't you realise - all polls are programmed to end just before you're ready to vote.

I just meant it seemed fast seeing as there was nothing posted here after your initial post and then cavebear's suggesting a little more info.

When I saw that second post I just crossed off this thread in my mind until there was a further post on the details of what the techs would do for us. I make a point of checking each thread with new replies. Unfortunately there were none until the thread closed.

Oh well, next time perhaps..?

Suffering from ads?

Being new to this, I wonder, does mean it will be Medicine??

It's a shame that Horse didn't get more consideration. One of the biggest needs is for cheap 2move explorer/defenders and it will be needed to get eventually to Sanitation. What is the appeal of Chemistry right now, btw??

Just wondering??

It means that as of right now the vote is 2 for Medicine and 1 for Horseback Riding. If I understand you correctly, you are a vote for Horseback Riding (but if so, please say so). In recent times, it has been suggested that we keep the polls to 3 days (in order to keep the game flowing), but as this poll has closed likely long before the game will be played, I will continue to record votes before sending a recommendation to the Consul.

Therefore, if you have not yet voted, please do so and I will attempt to take your write in votes into consideration at least up until the Consul requests reports from Ministers.

The poll is advisory. It may be ignored by the minister when giving his advice to the leader (but should be mentioned). It may be ignored by the leader when playing the turnset. If the poll is not followed, the leader or minister would be well advised to post a message explainging why - something happened during the turnset for example. Failing to follow a clear cut poll result would be grounds for impeachment.

It does depend on the view the citizens take of the seriousness of the issue. If we vote for no van re-homing, I would start impeachment proceedings against any leader that admitted doing it. I would be unlikely to worry too much about a leader who disregared a poll on the next technology and posted his reasons.

PS with luck we can trade techs with somebody and get to sanitation without horseriding - although I'm not sure we have much worth trading at the moment!

The Egyptos aren't very open to trades right now either... I think we'll have to do a LOT of the work for ourselves.

I too am hoping that we can get tradable techs, though we are so far behind (I think, though the white techs have me completely confused here) I am not sure what we have to trade either. Perhaps a recommendation from our Foreign Minister is in order here? It is for this reason that I have voted for techs that might not necessarily be needed right now by us, but will either be tradable to the AI or lead to additoinal techs that I don't beleive the AI will have researched yet, though without the benefit of Dips and Embassies, this is obviously guessing.

The white techs in our list mean we were first to discover it. It does not mean anyone else still needs it. I would be surprised if we had anything wanted by anyone, at this point.

Ordinarily I would agree completely, however our recent techs suggest we are not so far behind. Astronomy, Navigation, University and Banking are our four most recent techs and they are all white. (We have also seen Ironclads, so presumably whoever has Clads has most of these) I am betting that when we complete Economics it will also be White, and at least for the time being, we will have something tradable. Bottom line is that we are not as far behind as it may seem. Going by what information we have (powergraph for instance) suggests that the Zulus and the Celts are far ahead of everyone, but perhaps the other civs are similar to our positions?? (or at least within reach??)

* Sparrowhawk , musing

btw, how is it that we have contact with all civs already? We haven't landed anything to even meet with the Egyptians (the only civ we know where they are located), how did we manage to get contact with them let alone everyone else??

Edit: On checking our list of techs, we have 22 currently, and 11 of them are white. Regardless of how far we may be, we cannot be as far behind as we should be at this point in the game, with so little development.

We have contact with everyone because the Zulu built the UN. That's a side effect you probably never noticed because it was you who built the UN in your previous games.

White means before some/an AI, not before all. The fact of the UN already having been built made me think we were very far behind--at least the Zulu.

AH! That is MOST interesting! Thank you.

Foreign Affairs Minister? Cripes! That's me I guess! I forgot all about the fact we actually have contacted the Egyptians before, OR everyone else! Anyway, there's not much I could say without Embassies anyway.

I just realised - no Diplos means no Embassies! Shite!

Still MWIA, should we even contact them? (attitudes don't look great right now, but if we could get a tech exchange or a gift.....might it be worth it? or is the risk of war that we don't want too great?)

And Monk, I never would have even guessed that result of UN, I guess because either I have built it as you say, or I have contact with all others by the time it is built and thus didn't notice.

As for "White means before some/an AI, not before all"...do you mean that all of our white techs just mean that we didn't get them last? I though the idea of the White tech was that we got them FIRST, but if you are correct then it explains why we are still getting white techs even though we are far behind.

I could easily be wrong, but I think those techs are coded 'white' to let you know that, at the moment you discover that scroll, someone needs it.

Bloody Monk - Thanks for the explanation of the UN. It really surprised me when all the civs showed up in the Foreign Minister box. I thought maybe it was because of the year or something like that.

And yes, I almost always have contact with all civs by now, so the sudden appearance of all of them never happened to me before.
