One of the little rules of English orthography is that syllable-final -gh is silent, which suggests that we kurrah-sayers are right.

But where the heck does the word come from? I had never heard it before C3C.

But Klor, that would mean pronouncing it ker-og' (short for "Kermit the Frog"?)

Or even.....ker-or' (you mean, "augh" as in Evelyn Waugh" or Steve Waugh?)

Hmmm

Banana...

I normally pronounce it "kur-ag". Sometimes it's "koor-ag". Depends on my mood.

It's nice to know how it's really supposed to be pronounced though.

Is there a similar thread on the pronounciation of Hwach'a?

Just did a google search. As best as I can determine from that, the name derives from a relatively ancient or dark ages Irish sailing vessel. The name "curragh" is also the name of a specific place in Ireland, apparently.

Actually it's a contraction of 'curiously', and 'bugger', as in "For seafaring people, curiously, the bugger never sinks, even in ocean or sea"

a curragh is indeed irish,

its correct pronounciation is kurrah

it is an ancient form of a boat, not sure but i think it was cannoe like, made out of animal skins stretched arround a wooden frame. some saint supposedly sailed to america in one of these.

and yes it is also a place in ireland, actually only about 5 miles from me. this the horseracing home of ireland which also happens to contain the main barracks for the irish army,

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I was never really sure (as is common in the English language...just think of tough, it's not pronounced tow or some some such, but tuff), so I just went with kur-ag. Now that I know the proper way, though, I will go with Kurr-ah.

The dictionary mentions this is closer to the Irish etymology.

It also mentions a curragh is a type of coracle, but omits any mention of culture flipping...

Maybe they wanted to call it Coracle but didn't want to reward a naysayer by putting him in the game.

My gut reaction would be to say Kur-agk. But I would be open to correction on that.
