Supreme Military Commander discussion thread Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

This is not so much a poll as a place to discuss the defense of our rapidly expanding realm. At present we have the ability to build Warriors, Phalanx and Catapults. At least some of our opponents have Steam Engine, and so we are likely facing a very large tech gap.

The current topic of discussion is on how we can prepare to counter any possible aggression. At present we have been lucky with not encountering any other civs on the new land we are settling, although it is possible the land of those two Egyptian cities links to our new colonies. Since all we have in those cities at present is a single Fanatic (from a HUT), we would not be able to withstand an attack from any others.

So, what do we do? Clearly filling the place with Phalanx will not help, nor will adding some Cats help much. We may well need better military techs to prevent being overrun, and we can;t rely on our luck forever.

So should we now put a greater emphasis on military techs like Horseback Riding, Iron Working and then on to the bigger guns?

Also, cavebear, please post any sightings of military units from other civs, so we can determine what we will be up against in the coming centuries.

Things have been quiet on all our horizons, there have been no enemy sightings. It is as though our civ is too pathetic for the others to bother about. They are all probably playing diplomatic poker by themselves in some unknown paradise of machinery, fancy lighting, and exotic entertainment (I have heard rumors of a place called "Vegas").

I think tech research has to remain a priority. For military concerns, Horseback Riding, Warrior Code, and Feudalism to get to Chivalry might help us build some creditable defense/attack quickest.

Physics would be a possibility, to get to Magnetism for Galleons or Steam Engine for Ironclads.

I suspect we would have a hard time catching up in Seapower, given some of the ships we have seen go past our island, but we have a chance of constructing viable defenses in our cities while we continue to expand.

I'd say go for the Knights and build some Pikemen after we get Feudalism.

Sadly we cannot build Ironclads in this game.

Personally I thought this was a shame - we need some advantage to be able to have a chance at winning from here, and if it's one thing I know it's Superclads from the first game!

Yep, Clads would help, but, by now the AI may have Battleships. The lack of diplomats is a bigger handicap from my point of view. What this "Empire" needs is mo'betta tech, and it will be harder since we can't steal it. That's tricky anyway when you have to keep a spotless rep.

I think the first priority tech should be Horse. Not only will it give some defense but it makes a cheaper explorer than a camel. Actual Explorers are 50% more expensive but move better. Until horse is available, maybe it would be good to field an Explorer, especially to check towards the East of Utica.

Explorer! Excellent suggestion! In the next round of polls if I am a Minister in charge of anything like that), I will recommend one, or at the least as a citizen I will pressure the new Consul for one.
