Nominations for June Term Tired of ads?

It is time to announce your intentions/willingness to run for an office next term. There are few enough of us at the moment that we probably have to consider allowing multiple positions (and hoping that there is some competition for any of them).

In that regard, I hereby announce for City-Planner and Minister of Trade. I'm most comfortable with City-Planner, and I can at least keep track of what cities supply and demand which goods and where our Caravans are.

I will go for Foreign Affairs Guy at least, although I wanted Trade Supremo as well. I could do Consul again if no-one better volunteers.

I would suggest that you run for Trade then, it would be good to see a contested election.

And if you were both running for another position, there would be no one left out regardless of the outcome.

Btw, I nominate Bloody Monk for Consul (I know he hasn't posted here, but I have encouraged him to check out the game and think he would be a great addition to the game). Besides, I think he would be some much needed new "Blood" around here (pun intended ).

LOL, our fearless leader!!

Depending on the form of Government, the elected Leader (the person who actually plays the game) is called by the position of whatever form of government we are currently in (and as we are currently in a republic...our leader is "Consul").

I have nominated you for Consul, and beleive you would be more then able to handle the role (basing your playing on the reports of the Ministers, and the results of the polls), and playing until you get to a point where a decision which has not been polled on needs to be made. If however you are not quite ready for Consul yet, you could put your name up for any of the Ministerial positions (self nominations are not only allowed, but encouraged), any of which I am certain you could handle.

Further Note: In this game unlike previous games, when we switch Governments, we require a new election (and likely though not necessarily) a new leader (but this should not come up for a few techs at least).

Welcome, Bloody Monk. All your thoughts and opinions are welcomed. I would be particularly interested in any info/threads bumped on ICS, Hut finding, this "black-clicking" you mentioned, and other things. I joined this game over 2 years ago to learn how to be better at Civ2, and although I have learned much (Xinning, use of Caravans), there is much I have yet to master.

Understood Bloody Monk, but I hope you consider a Ministerial position, we are short on members right now, and at this point in the game anyone stepping up is a good thing (and most of the Ministeries have limited duties at this point in the game, so you should have time to catch up on proceedure without much difficulty).

btw, -Jrabbit was a regular on the last Democracy Game (and others I beleive, any chance you could similarly encourage him to rejoin us??)

ICS is in the GL - it is simply a strategy of building a lot of small cities with overlapping boundaries. To the perfectionists, any city with a boundary overlapping another city's boundary is ICS. More often the term is used for a game playing strategy where a large number of cities are actually built within the radius of another city (ie 2 tiles away).

Hut finder is a program developed by SGx that enables you to determine the location of huts and specials on the game map. The latest version came out a while back and is downloadable from (I think) the strategy thread. "Black clicking" is putting the cursor on an unexplored tile. You can then tell by the continent number whether it is land or ocean - it doesn't work for continent number 1.

The majority opinion is that hut finder and black clicking (and other dark arts) are acceptable. I hold the minority opinion that they are "contrary to the spirit of the game".

Enter the AD-FREE zone

SG1's Hutfinder may indeed be an explotation that pushes the line. Blackclicking, on the other hand, uses information hidden in plain sight. Like using "Find City" to locate the general location (but in the black) of an AI WOW city, I think blackclicking is acceptable.

I noticed they were not being used and therefore I asked. What is the consenus??

Maybe blackclicking works differently on other (Mac) systems. I am running WinXP home.

To make this procedure work, for me, I right click on a black tile. The map co-ordinates are given plus a third number that represents the continent. In this scheme, water is #1, as is the main land mass.

In our case, right clicking in vectors away from the home island will result in 1's until land is reached. Different numbers represent different (non-contiguous) land masses.

In case you want to try this out....

I think it may be game version dependent as well as O/S dependent. In my version of 2.42 running on XP you can simply use the arrow keys to move the highlighted tile and thus get the continent number. In my version of MGE, you can't use the arrow key, but you can sometimes left-click and allways right click.

That is, in theory how you would do it on my machine. I don't ever really do it of course. To do so would be wicked and I would go straight to hell. It's just that sometimes my finger slips.

As a cleric I am tempted to say, "Go forth and sin no more;" but, I believe it more appropriate to say, "It is written, the Lord helps those who help themselves."

It is also commonly said, "Your mileage may vary." Which is to say, "One should never be (do) where one does not belong."

You be the (best) judge of that.

We are in danger of hijacking the nominations thread ... but,

I am most tempted to use this exploit when my trireme has found some new land and I can save a lot of time if I know whether or not this land is part of my home island / continent. What I need is a fine jesuitical argument that says it's OK to use the trick on land tiles you have already discovered.

As far as I am concerned, NOT using it, refusing to use it at all, is like pretending not to notice that the flag is not flying over an AI city. The information is plainly visible; all you have to do is look.

And, any good Jesuit will tell you to suck it up and do what is necessary for the glory of Rome.

It looks like Cavebear makes any changes to the cities and saves the game. MWIA then moves all the units and hits enter. He then saves the game and Cavebear takes over again. Repeat until June is over - good job it only has 30 days.

Who needs a consul when you have 2 good ministers.

I fully understand Monk's desire to see what the Cabinet jobs involve before serving. I'm sure most of us were observers a month or two before taking the plunge.

If no one else is able to be or feels comfortable being Consul this month, I'm willing to serve again. Someone else should take the Ministerial positions though. We most need a Minister of Science now. Of course, I'll do which ever functions are not filled.

Nominations:

Tell me what a Minister does--especially, how to create a poll--and I will reconsider if it seems doable. Wouldn't want all the burden to fall on one person even the alternative is likely to produce a raft of snafu's.

A Minister posts polls and then reports the results to the Consul.

To post a poll, open a post and explain the purpose and issues briefly. Then before submitting the post, click on the "Yes, Post a Poll" box just above the "Submit" buttons. You will be sent to a poll construction place. Don't worry, it's not too complicated (though you will worry about it).

On the 3rd line, post the poll question. This will be the subject line of the thread. The 4th line is the number of options you want polled. You may want to look at any of our past polls to see the kinds of options to offer. I will mention that we always have a "banana" option. That is really for "none of the above" or "I just feel like being annoying". It's traditional and in some games, we have even had banana currency and banana State Seals and logos. Just think of it as an opt-out voter option.

When you have all the options you want for voting (and keep in mind that the object is to allow all POV's) make sure the number in line 4 equals all the options.

Line 6 "Options" allows multiple voting. If you have a poll that encourages just one choice (like what kind of unit to build in a city, leave that unchecked. If your poll is one that people can make several choices in, then check that box. A poll that allows only one choice will show circles in the poll options. A multiple choice poll will show squares.

Line 7 is important ansd often forgotten. It gives the length of polls in days. The default is 0, which actually means it stays open forever. You don't want that. # days is our standard poll length, so just type in "3".

At the very bottom of the poll screen are the options to "Submit New Poll" and "Preview Poll". PREVIEW THE POLL! LOL! You'll see how it looks and you can make changes there (add voting options, change poll length, etc).

I was scared to death the first poll I placed, and all of us have made ocassional mistakes with them. Not specifying poll days and not allowing multiple choice are the usual mistakes.

Feel free to post a test poll on something as practice. We'll understand. This is REALLY team play here, so don't worry about errors or not understanding something. Ask, and you will receive all the information the whole group has to offer.

If you have other questions, post them or PM me.

after the success of convincing Bloody Monk to join us I sent out requests to two former Demo Gamers who still post regularly at Apolyton (in other forums) to return to the game.

Both have read their PM's, but the only response I have so far is from -Jrabbit, who doesn't have the time for Consul right now, but said he would check out the forum. He also said to "Send my regards to cavebear and the gang..."

Fingers crossed on someone else returning to fill a vacant slot above, but seeing as Cavebear has volunteered to continue as Consul, I can at least put my name up for Minister of Trade and will also run against MWIA for Minister of War (which I hope has limited duties for now, which is why I would like this position now rather then later ). This leaves Science and City Planner vacant for Monk to consider (or running for any of the others, if he decides to run for any of the others, I will happily vote for him....even over myself ).

Fantastic, we have a contested election!

Will someone serve as Minister of Science? All you have to do is post a poll to register the desires of the Citizens about what to research next.

I'll hold off posting the elections for 24 hours in hopes of getting volunteers for the full Cabinet, but I will post them tomorrow (Monday afternoon) with everyone we have that are willing to serve our Glorious Apolytinian civ.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Minister of Science is responsible for suggesting next techs to be researched. The MoS post polls to get the general sense of the Citizens as to the next techs we should research. He is also responsible for specifically suggesting techs that might be most valuable in trades with other civs and ones we might want to avoid trading away (not much of an issue in THIS game. LOL!

City-Planner is responsible for both what to build in cities and where to place Workers in existing cities, and where to situate new cities and places polls on both when it matters. We used to have a Minister of Expansion for that last duty, but I have always thought it suited the City-Planner job.

In short, Minister of Science advises about techs and City-Planner advises about what do build in cities. The sites for new cities are usually pretty obvious.

Based on your post, I will place you for election for Minister of Science and City-Planner.

And you can always ask about any peculiar habits we have here. Welcome to the game!
