Request for - and comments on - an Apolyton Location FAQ Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

About two weeks ago, I asked for comments in this thread in the OT, on the idea of setting up an Apolyton Location FAQ. I posed the question in the OT first, as I thought the people most likely to change their location field to something humorous instead of their actual location would be OT'ers. Anyway, the proposal got no negative responses, and I decided to go on with the idea.

I'm willing to start the Location FAQ and maintain it in the future. I'd like it to be placed here in the Apolyton Forum, as the intent of it is for all posters to be able to quickly find out the location of others without having to search for the username first (and possibly find that the location field doesn't reflect the location).

The idea is for me to collect the locations of as many posters as possible by looking at their profile/location field. Those that currently don't display their location in the location field can then post it here, if they are interested in being included in the FAQ. In other words, those that already display their location or post it here will be included - and those that prefer to keep their location to themselves will be left out.

Would this be a desirable feature to include in our community, DanQ and MarkG?

As an example, I've set up a mini-FAQ below with the locations of the people who replied to the aforementioned thread in the OT. I'm thinking of listing the posters alphabetically as well as listing the locations alphabetically, more or less as it's shown here. But I will need some ideas on how to format it better (especially the list sorted by locations).

Questions and comments to this suggestion are most welcome.

<img src=/forums/"/images/blue1.gif" width=100% height=1></font></td></tr></table></center>I would not suggest taking info from anyone other than the person in question, since we don't know whether or not they want their location disclosed.

For that matter, people who have their location field in their profile, may not wish to be added to the list either. I think it's safer to only add people who actually come to Legman's thread and announce they wish to be added to the list.

To give you one example from the age faq, I had one guy come in once and request that I take him off the birthday calendar. Even though his date of birth was in the age faq (and he didn't care about that) he didn't want it to be in the calendar. There may be ppl on the forums who have their location in their profile, but don't wish to be added to any list, for whatever reason. Just a thought...

Full PM-box? Change here!

Thanks for the warm welcome you've given this idea - and for the eagerness I sense to get this thing set up. But for now (next couple of days), work with the FAQ will be put on hold - for two reasons:

1) I will need some kind of reaction (preferably with a stamp of approval ) from the admins on the whole idea of the FAQ before I continue to collect the info needed to set it up

2) I'm catching a nasty cold and I feel like I'm going down fast

- So until word is given by the admins, aa-choo! to you all for now.

It would be worthwhile to transfer some of the extant data from previous threads viz:
http://apolyton.net/forums/Forum1/HTML/001327.html?75

I also started one on "Where do we come from?" in OT but I can't seem to find it in the current OT listing.

you could include time zone to the faq, it'd be quite useful

format: for the user name list, i suggest a table, main headings: User Name, Country, City/State, Time Zone. As for the location list, the way you have it may be the simplest format to go with.

. Rather than a FAQ which requires much fiddling around to be useful, I would suggest an additional otional profile, assuming that is posible, with plenty of fields for whatever indetifying infromation the menber fells confortable to reveal to us (mad ravining maniacs). This would not require any entry or updates by the admin/moderators, it would tbe filled out by the member himself. Not being too familer with IT or the UBB in particular I do Not Know if this is posible either as an additional optional profile for the "real person" as as opposed to the "cyber personna"
or as additional fields to the existing profile. If two profiles are posibble, the existing "cyber one should contain all the cyber personna's info & humor and only such real info as is neccesary for to have membership. The optional real profile would have feild for id, addresses, contact numbers, birthdays, bio etc.
. If psoiible this could eliminate all the personel FAQs and their updates and other demands on the admin.

Good thinking, Lefty Scaevola. It's just that - speaking for myself only of course - I know I'd actually enjoy setting up a location FAQ like I've proposed here. (I'm not into legs exclusively - geography can make my day too ). And I think an FAQ would be darn useful too.

If only the admins would voice their opinion of my suggestion so I could get to work on it.

On topic, I note that the "where are we" thread in Civ2-General is having a new lease of life. There's minable data being collected while we wait.
