City View? Support Apolyton, buy GURPS/ Alpha Centauri

hi. i just bought civ3 conquests and i'm playing a custom map. for some reason i couldn't get to the city view (city graphics where you can see your city improvements, wonders, etc). none of my "civ-content" games has the city view option! i can't even view the palace. is it just me or what? thanks for any help.

They disabled it outside of the Epic game, to cut out the need for extra artwork for the Conquests and scenarios.

The city view was boring anyway.
The bigger the city became, the more the same it stayed....

well thanks for the replies. i thought i did something wrong there. kind of a shame that it's not included though, it's true there's really not much use for it (i didn't even notice it til today_ i bought the game last week), but it was nice to look into your city once or twice. too bad they didn't include it.

i always hated the city view...

(always thought a city of 5 million shouldnt look the same as a city with 30,000...)

Not totally true. The artwork itself wasn't the big problem (although the artists were very busy getting units and leaderheads cranked out, as well as the art for the campaigns that didn't make the final cut). The problem is that the number of 'slots' for artwork on that screen were hardcoded (as well as the file names, IIRC). This would have taken the programmers a bit of time to fix (and programmer time was very much at a premium at that time on the project - they were working on much higher poriority issues).

The short answer as usual is time and money. Firaxis and Breakaway were given a fixed budget and schedule to deliver Conquests. Priorities had to be made.

They do have a habit of hardcoding stuff that shouldn't be, don't they?

I just hope that in civ4 they'll make a city-screen that actually works. The civ 1 screen was great. It gave a perfect idea of how big the city was.

And of course the marching soldiers when you conquered the city was a cool sight as well!

Put an end to popups!

That forum is death, AFAICS.
One day some firaxis guy said the word 'civ4', then a whole lot of civ-community started to produce lists etc.

And since then tons of list-material has been produced, but no firaxis guy has mentioned the civ-4 word again.

I'm afraid they're still reading through the list-material

Yeah, I know that.
But I'll wait untill the civ4 hype will be higher, and firaxis guys will visit these forums again.

It makes no sence to post it, and see it drop to page 4596 where no firaxis guy will ever read it

The problem is that when they start hyping Civ4 it'll be too late, most of the design decisions will already have been made. If you want to have an impact on Civ4, now would be the time to post ideas. Firaxians have told us numerous times in the past that they're keeping an eye on our suggestions, there's no reason to assume they've stopped doing so, even if they don't actually post anymore.

And it WAS so cool just checking on your city view every now and again and feeling that pride at its new growth.

Remember the people parading past on WLT*D? That was great too!

Get yourself CivWindows, it's just a little bit easier to deal with. I made sure my old games including Civ have been backed up on a CD. My favourite CD of all time, as it has so many classics on it...

Nostalgia ain't bad, as long as you're looking forward too... you can BET Civ4 will have an even more improved version. And of lots more than just the City view too.

Civ didn't regress. It became better and better.
But of course it lost some cool features as well.

The city view is one of the least important features. It's pure nostalgia. I'd chose civ3 always over civ1.

But civ1 is a game I played when I was 16!

The civ1 city screen was better in the way that a large city actually *looked* like a large city. But the way wonders and building moved around each time you opened the screen somewhat lessened the value of this screen...

The marching troops were cool though :vik:

That was because you viewed at the city from a different perspective everytime
