It allows anyone to see who made the last post to a thread. This means that if you see the last post was by Andz then you know not to bother re-opening the thread.
If you see it's by MtG then you know to prepare a packed lunch a comfortable chair before starting to read it.

We've had this feature at CGN since the beginning, and it's worked well for us. I particularly like the fact that tells you which thread you last replied to, so you don't waste time opening threads where no one else has replied to yet.
