Does anyone know whether a city wiped out by volcanic eruption would count as a lost city in elimination mode?

[mini-spoiler:

I'm guessing yes, and gave up some choice real-estate in a current PBEM to avoid it...]

I don't know. Does abandoning a city count? If yes, I would imagine that volcano destruction counts aswell.

I don't know about abandoning cities. How do you do it? I thought it was an option on the right-click menu, but it wasn't available for either city in the game I just checked. Do you need to build a settler/worker?

I haven't seen them actively erupting, but two different games have pollution around volcanoes... Do you always play with MPTournament.biq, Tripledoc? I know there are a few such mods specific to MP in there only.

Tired of ads?

Abandoning cities is tricky in Civ3. You have to be building a worker while at size 1 or a settler while at size 2, and you can not have any surplus food coming in. Thus at size 1 you need no more than 2 food and at size 2 no more than 4 food. If these conditions are met, then when the worker or settler is completed, you'll be given an option to abandon the city.

Normally you right-click and chose abandon, but in an elimination game, it makes sense if the 'abandon city' option was removed (I haven't actually tried elimination myself, just guessing here )

I believe the Abandon City option is introduced in one of the expansion packs. I don't remember seeing it in Civ3 vanilla but I see it all the time, at least for captured cities.

You cannot abandon cities in elimination mode. The option is removed from the right click menu. Also, volcanos DO erupt in multiplayer games, but NOT if elimination mode is turned on. Thus, you cannot be eliminated by a volcano (unless you only have one city in non-elim mode, of course).

Is it still an option (in elimination mode) if you do it the old-fasioned settler/worker/limited-food-supply way that albiedamned described?

Another elimination question:

When playing multiple-city elimination, what happens to cities defeated that are short of the limit? Are they all auto-razed or can some be captured? If a Tribe is eliminated entirely, do the cities they lost previously survive, or are they auto-razed alongwith the rest of their cities?

Thanks to the MPers...

Actually, cities captured that are short of the limit work just like capturing a city in non-elimination. Let me give an example:

The game is 2-city elimination and Player A captures a city from Player B. Player A keeps the city as per usual (assuming it's above size 1 or has some culture built up). Player A now controls the city. Player B attacks the city the next turn and recaptures it. Each player has now lost one city. Player A attacks yet again the following turn and retakes the city. This is now the second city that Player B has lost, so he is eliminated. All of the cities that he controlled at the time of his elimination are razed (not including the city in question, as he didn't control it).

Hope that makes sense.

Are you allowed to raze the city you take? Kind of hard to defend one isolated city far away from the rest of your empire...

No, you cannot raze a city that you capture (otherwise, you'd be eliminated!).

It's important in elim games to pay special attention to the cities you attack. If it's a far away city near other enemies, it might be better to NOT target that city.

No, it just means that you must plan your attacks better. Don't try to take a city unless you can hold it.

Hint: New cities are particularly attractive targets.

It's not meant to be played against the AI. It makes for too easy of a game then. The AI doesn't understand the concept of elimination and will continue building useless little cities wherever they see fit.

It's meant to be played against other human players. It can make for a stressful game. One mistake and you are OUT!

There is a checkbox in the MP setup screen where culture-flipping can be turned on or off. People usually turn it off as losing an elim game due to a culture flip is seen as "cheesy". I have seen it happen though. So, yes, if the culture flipping option is enabled, it IS possible to be eliminated by a culture flip.

Just found out that you can autoraze a just captured city without suffering a city loss. I'm playing 3 city elimination against the AI and autorazed a city. Even though I'm at 2 cities lost already, the razing didn't count as my third.

[Yes I know elimination against the AI is weak, but I'm testing out the Tarzan mod.]

I also just had a city culture flip to me, but won't be able to verify if it counts as a loss for the AI for a while. What happens when a flip is rebuffed, nothing?

keep the autosaves, then replay it later.

or use some cheating tool for invincible and unlimited movemenent units (iirc the powerbar used to do that) and attack the AI city to check it

No, autorazing doesn't count as a lost city for the conqueror. Autorazing = capturing a size 1 city with no culture. It does count as a lost city for the civ that lost it.

A culture flip does count as a lost city for purposes of elimination. I've seen a few times in 1-city elim where someone was eliminated by having one of their cities flip. What a way to lose!

I'm not sure what it's called then, but I was offered the option to keep the city (over size 1) and refused, which is what Bongo originally asked about. The city was razed, I got a slave, but it didn't count as a lost city for me.

I went back to check the autosave on the culture flip turn, but it saved after the production phase. I'll be taking a couple more of their cities soon...
