I gave up on Civ 3 years ago when it just didn't grab me, but I'm hearing a lot of good things about PTW and Conquests, so I might be getting back into it.
It strikes me that these "Democracy" games look like a lot of fun- particularly the machiavellian maneuvering and backstabbing. But I can't find a FAQ or anything explaining how exactly they work. (Also, a nice overview of thse particular game would be nice- is anyone writing histories?)
I understand how a "Everyone is on the Same Team" game works- share the save, vote on actions, etc. But how do you all keep things a secret? How do different teams organize?

Every team has its own private forum. Teams are chosen before the game begins with certain themes. For example, in this game there is a team about war, a team about building, a team about roleplaying, etc. But the themes can get pretty weird. In another game there are teams themed about Monkeys, (Japanese) food and the Iraqi government.
The games are played via PBEM, and usually take a pretty significant amount of time to play. Teams negotiate with each other through PM, chat and email and make alliances, backstabs, invasion plans, etc.
That's the quick and dirty summary. If you have any more questions about how things work just post.

Oh, there are private forums, I see, I see.
This one seems pretty mature. Probably too late for me to get involved. Do y'all plan on starting another one after it?

Which is the new one? I only see two forums for Democracy games here.
I'm not interested in participating in much more than an advisorial and observational capacity. I'm an International Affairs student, and so this sort of thing is naturally very interesting. (I'm also *terrible* at Civ3, so...my advice would be limited. I could manage diplomacy like a master, though.)
You all should realize you've been acting out several elements of IR theory, only, you know, in game form, with far more chicken-related humor. 'tis fascinating.

If you want in on this one, where the diplomacy is very very complex (the ptwisdg is much less at this point) consider joining a team. Maybe even my team, Gathering storm. We are quite open to newcomers. (and we tend to be really really bad at diplomacy, so you could put your skills to work )
