Chapter 4 - His luck has just run out
The next morning on his way to the Committee of Public Safety, comte de Sade met Georges-Jacques Guillotin and they started to talk about two sadistic crimes that have happened in the last couple of days. Guillotin informed the marquis about his examination of the body of Prince Louis and how he had discovered something strange. Previously he had thought the murderer had inflicted the injuries using a whip, or a cord of some kind. But after the preliminary examination he was no longer sure. Judging by the lesions on the Prince’s body, the murderer was probably using a stick of some kind. Before jumping to any conclusion, Guillotin decided to examine the body of Marquis de Lafayette, compare the marks and then be sure about the murder weapon.
“It is obviously the work of a madman. An insane, unreasonable man”, Guillotin commented the killer’s state of mind.
“Not necessarily, my friend”, replied comte de Sade. “I have spent my entire life studying the human character. Judging by what I have seen, our killer is not deranged at all. I believe he appears as a model of sanity, paradigm of reason during the day. But his other nature, the vile, devious, sadistic one shows during the night.”
“Yes, sadistic indeed.”
Comte de Sade laughed.
But soon he didn’t feel like laughing any more, when he learned that the voting had gone his way and that he was neck and neck with the King. In fact, the final tally was 8 votes each. Robespierre suggested the solution to this deadlock. Rather than repeating the vote, he would toss a coin and the King would chose heads or tails. The King promptly chose tails and tails it was.
Comte de Sade protested.
“Why haven’t I been given the opportunity to choose? I would have chosen tails for sure.”
“Sorry Tubs, you have been lucky thus far avoiding the guillotine, but I guess your luck has just run out. Off with his head”, shouted Danton.
And Tuberski was dragged to Place de la Révolution and guillotined half an hour later. “If I had been given the chance to live my life again, to change everything, I would have changed nothing, I would have done the same things again, only ten times worse and more sadistic”, were his famous last words.
“He was a sadistic maniac indeed”, observed Prime Minister Necker.
“Yes, but was he the murderer? Who knows? Only time will tell”, replied General Bonaparte.

Later that day the Parisians learned that England had declared war on France.
The Queen received the news with jubilation.
“At last! We are saved Louis! England will crush the revolutionary France and our titles and powers will be restored.”
“My dear Marie. We need much more than lonely England to crush this popular rebellion. We need an Austrian military intervention. What does your cousin Metternich say to this?”
“I’ve agreed with him to meet him tomorrow. We’ll know more about his plans after that meeting.”
******
Meanwhile at the National Assembly Brissot, de Mirabeau, Danton and Robespierre met to discuss the current issues and to prepare the session of the National Assembly related to the war with England.
“We must appoint General Bonaparte as Commander in chief of the French Army as soon as possible”, Brissot was determined.
“The Jacobins can possibly vote for your candidate for Army Commander, but only if you support the appointment of Danton as new Minister of Justice and me as new Minister of Interior.”
“Never!!!!” shouted Brissot.
Danton stood up and moved towards the door.
“Then I think we have nothing more to talk about.”
Danton left.
Robespierre followed him.
“Are you coming Jacques-Pierre?” comte de Mirabeau asked Brissot.
“Don’t wait for me Gabriel. I’ll stay a bit more to prepare my speech for tomorrow”, replied Brissot.
In front of the Assembly Robespierre was waiting for comte de Mirabeau.
“Monsieur Robespierre, I’m sure we can come to some kind of arrangement. For instance, if you support me as Prime Minister instead of Necker, I can support the two of you and then you in turn can support Napoléon.”
“A very interesting proposal citizen Mirabeau. But what about Brissot?”
“Let me worry about Brissot.”
“All right, I trust you can find the way to persuade him. Good night citizen Mirabeau. See you tomorrow at the Assembly.”
“Good night Monsieur Robespierre.”
******
The next morning when compte de Mirabeau arrived to the National Assembly he noticed that Brissot never left. When he looked closer he noticed Brissot wasn’t moving. Yes, his good friend Octavian X was dead. Mirabeau was so shocked he was barely able to utter a scream which alerted the others.
“Hmm, poisoning again”, diagnosed Guillotin. “Lead poisoning”.
“Look at his right hand”, Napoléon noticed something very strange. “It’s covered with wax. As if he was holding a candle.”
“And his left hand. It’s closed in a fist. I wonder what’s in there.”
When they opened Brisot’s left hand, they noticed a small piece of soap and a torn fragment of a much larger paper. Word under was written on it. They all looked under, but they saw nothing significant.
“Very mysterious indeed”, Napoléon was puzzled.
