forts = colonies ? Remove this text

Why does the AI build forts on resources outside of its cultural borders? Do Forts do the same as colonies? e.g. bring the resource 'below' back home?

I do know that colonies turn into forts when raided by an enemy unit.

Anyway, i'm just curious if forts have the same power as colonies.

thanks in advance

Got spare money?

Nope, the ai builds forts on colonies so that they are better defended. Actually, the ai will build the fort before the colony. I build the colony and then the fort if needed.

Enter the AD-FREE zone

Oh, and colonies don't turn into forts when raided. The colony is destroyed, and the underlaying fort shows up.

Never saw that happening...........
I have to admit that I never use colonies anymore. Eventhough I loved the system. These days I just plant a city next to the resource.

Don't use colonies unless its absolutely necessary. Colonies need a major upgrade for CIV IV.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

I loved the concept in the beginning, and build quiet a lot of colonies. But in those days I didn't adapt the "build as much as possible cities" concept, right now the "build a city next to a resource" perfectly fits within that concept, rather than a 'waste a worker for a colony' thing.
