Mozilla 0.6 and Apolyton Enter the AD-FREE zone

I have just found that Mozilla came out with a new version, 0.6, which is supposedly same as Netscape 6. I am downloading it now. Has anybody used it to browse Apolyton? Any comments?

At first glance, it seems to be better than Netscape 6.. haven't used it for very long though... so I'll wait a bit to give a better judgement.

At least my go-box doesn't seem to be jumping around on my screen anymore................

................

edit: and the minute I post that, my go box is on the other side of the screen

At least the screen fonts are bigger than the one in Netscape. I can also enter my messages fine.

So far so good.

EDIT: I don't seem to have any problems editing my messages either, and my pull down menu (the "Go" box) is fine.

Works great for me. Running the Linux binaries on a heavily customized Mandrake 7.0, kernel 2.4.8.

I've already found it more stable than old Netscape 4.7, and finally I can get the the most out of java and flash without crashimg my browser. Moz.6 has quite a memory print when its running, but I threw in another 256M DIMM a few weeks back, so I've got plenty to spare now. As for performance, it easily beats in speed any version of IE or Netscape I've used with this hardware on any OS. The 56k line isn't exactly blazing with any browser, but this beats old 4.7 for sure. I haven't found any clitches in the interface yet, but the browser still crashes occasionally when weird content is thrown at it (one of the banners on Apolyton trips it before the first image loads fully. Somebody had a thread on it here...).

If you still use Netscape 4.7x, the Moz 0.6 is deffenitely worth the download.

Put an end to popups!

Narck,

You're right. I have problems editing long passages directly in a textarea box. It's a bad practice to do so anyway, though they should fix the bug

As many posters have found out it's better to use a text editor to enter long messages, since your brower can crash at any time (IE included).

Another bug is I don't get to see the previous posts while relying even if the thread contains less than 25 messages. *shrug* Yeah it still got bugs, that's why it's version 0.6 .

Jeez!

You guys know what? It's not the browsers fault! When designing a site, one should always use Netscape browsers to check it, as they adhere to the standards set forth with the latest html code revises. IE is a laymens browser.

Here's what my mozilla 0.6 looks like:
http://narck.webjump.com/Apolyton/Mozilla.jpg

I reduced the size of the file to 53K for faster loading, it's not too clear but will do for noticing I don't have a location bar which indeed has nothing to do with HTML coding

Narck,

Ah, using Windoze Extra Strength . That could be the problem. I had no problems using it on Windoze Regular, NT, and Linux.

Provost,

Use IE? Are you mad? Did Billg pay you? Last time I started Internet Exploder on a Windoze machine with both Mozilla 0.6 and ICQ 2000B already running, it crashed the computer. It was frozen so badly that <ctrl><alt><del> wouldn't work.

On and off... Currently on. I'm mostly in the Civ3 section now.

Moz.6 still working fine for me. The only times it has crashed is with some of the goofier banner adds around Apolyton, but since none of them seem to be in circulation right now, I have no porblems with that. Since the previous versions of Netscape for Linux were awfull with java and flash, this is considerable improvement. Wheel scrolling also works without any hacks, yay!

One thing I would complain about is the apparent lack of proper encryption in 0.6 for Linux. Most secure sites that use SSL refuse connections from my Moz client, and I have to revert to old Netscape 4.7 to access the sites. A real pain when shopping, for example. I wasn't able to find the security settings in the Moz preferences. Either they are yet to be implemented, or my system disables them for some odd reason. I think I'll look into it on the Moz site. I'll keep you folks posted on this...

Oh, there's one more weird thing... For some odd reason the lines on top and bottom of all the quotes are flashing on some of the forum pages, usually on those I've just made a post on. Looks really weird. A reload usally takes care of it, but it still annoys the hell out of me.

I've also tried the Win (98 runnin in a VMWare virtual machine) and MacOS clients. Both run quite smoothly, although start up quite slow. I don't know if either of those clients have similar encryption problems as the Linux one.

Kumiorava,

C'mon, we can all read the Mozilla website now, can't we? It says that to use SSL, you need to download a plug-in.

Though even after I downloaded it still can't get into Hotmail. *shrug*

Ouch... Do'h. Maby should have checked the site earlier. Thanks UR. You got me big time there.

*Kumi chokes in his own saliva and goes download plugin*

Edit: So, feeling like a total idiot, I went to the Moz site and proceeded to install the PSM plugin (a 3rd party piece of software, free but closed as far as I could tell). The whole thing went quite smoothly. So I restarted Moz, and with high hopes atempted to acces my e-mail account through it's web-based interface. Moz promptly froze, and I had to kill it. So I tried one of my Hotmail scam accounts. Same thing. After trying two more sites, it appears to me that the particular plugin is bugier than Windows ME. At least the Linux version turned out to be useles, and actually made Moz more unstable while increasing the memory footprint. Could be that some hack might make it work, but I don't have time to mess around with it.

So I guess I'll just have to do without SSL until a proper plugin is churned out for Moz. There's also an open source Moz PSM project under works, 'though I have no idea what it's state of development is.

Reinstalled the program, still doesn't work for me.
No location bar.

Hop to Field:

In 50% of the cases it will work fine, in 25% it will "freeze" meaning I cannot click on it, it's just another graphic on the page, in the remaining 25% it will "jump" to the top of the list if I click on it, which is annoying if I, for example, am in the Apolyton forum, and want to hop to the OT forum, I then have to scroll all the way down because the list reset to the top.
