Actually, I do it all the time in the fiction section. Most of the stories center on the faction leaders (obviously), but interesting minor characters develop along the way. All of these characters 'role play' within the larger story.

Some folks, such as Vel (and numerous others), are quite talented at developing characters and storylines within the SMAC/X universe. Vel's past fiction, and the Dauntless story he is posting right now, are very good indeed.
