Question for Dan, Mark or anyone who might know. Tired of ads?

On some UBB forums if I make a post, I can't get the updated page showing what I posted, sometimes not until a 2-3 hours later.

These forums are the ones where I have this problem.

ubb 5.44b

Is there a particular setting on my browser that needs to be enabled or is it related to the web proxy used by my isp?

No, in Australia we don't live with kangaroos and koalas in our backyards... Despite any stupid advertisments you may see to the contrary... (And no, koalas don't usually speak!)

Support Apolyton, buy Civilization: The Boardgame

The reason is, quite simply, that apolyton has a hack which appends a question mark and a post number onto the end of the url (used to be the time of the last post), fooling the cache into thinking you're loading a different page each time a new post is added (Which, in fact, you are, but the computer does not know that). This hack is lacking from the other forums.

our hack is not there to fool the chache and reload the thread, but to fool the visited/unvisited feature of the browsers into showing a thread with new posts as unvisited

Got spare money?

Mark, any idea which setting?

My standard settings
Internet - Virtually everthing disabled. Only file and font download enabled.
Trusted sites - Java scripting and cookies enabled with prompting. I use the PTFB utility to dispose of the prompt windows. Java = yes, Cookies = no unless a site can give me a really good reason to accept it.

The elderscrolls forum is listed in trusted sites whereas CGN isn't.

Cache = 1mb
Web history = 1 day

Refresh button/F5 has no effect.

Well, Mark, I have had problems in the past with the combination Internet Explorer and forums without the time/post-number append hack. On some (often public) computers, especially with IE 4.1, I have had the same problem Mouse described, and could not solve it short of clearing the cache in between each page load. Your hack has the nice side-benefit of actually stopping this stupid behaviour.

Oh, and if you want to see your post use CTRL+F5 instead of just F5. I think that might work.

Put an end to popups!

Try typing in ?aaa or something (with the ? in front) after the URL. That's the only advice I can give. Doesn't give much relief, admittedly. Or, preassure the webmasters to include the ?1 hack.

if you have ie, see "tools" -> "internet options", then the "settings" button under "temporary internet files"
choose "every visit to the page"

I've tried that, and every other setting there with no effect. Could it be my isp's web proxy rather than my computer?

Edit - Snapcase, that worked.

I'll have a chat to my isp then.

Update, adding ?a will get the updated page, but if I then reload that url without the ?a, the old page returns.

Mouse,

Clear both the memeory and disk cache. That should force a reload.

I don't get this problem at Apolyton. But at Newsmax, I usually use thecloak ( http://www.the-cloak.com ) or some other remote proxy and I have no problems.

I'll try the hack with the letters after the ?.

Mouse,

You can try a direct connection to a problematic website to see if it's a proxy problem.

Builder,

No, just when he can't see the updates.

Builder, tried that. It's not my cache that's the problem.

My isp uses a transparent proxy, meaning I don't have to configure my browser for it. This means I can't do direct connections.

I've discovered some additions for this fix.

Adding ?a after a post does work, but if I made another post on that thread, the unmod'ed url gets the pre 1st post, url+?a gets page with first post but not with second post and url+?aa get fully updated page.
