WARNING: IF YOU'RE ON A SLOW CONNECTION IMAGES ON THIS THREAD MAY TAKE A WHILE TO LOAD
The group stage of 'Poly 2004 kicked off today, with Ceroo dealt a HUGE blow with the news that star player Ryan Giggs will miss the game through injury. Coupled with return of Karakas star defender Roberto Ayala, it looked like Ceroo were in for a torrid time, and the predictions were not wrong, as only determined defending could keep out the Karakan attack which laid seige to the Cerooan 18-yard box.
After half an hour, the Karakan dominance was rewarded as midfielder Will Rosenberg hit a suberb 30-mtr shot past Paul Jones.
After half-time Ceroo upped the tempo, with big forward John Hartson making way for the young Robert Earnshaw, whose skill and pace dazzled the Karakan defence, but was unable to beat the woodwork, as he hit each post and the crossbar, before a Karakan counter-attack led to Rosenberg's second goal.
Manager Mark Hughes then substitued the ineffective Robbie Savage for Mark Pembridge, which proved to be an inspired substitution, Pembridge spliting the Karakan defence with a superb pass, Earnshaw scoring- but the goal was disallowed- Earnshaw judged to have elbowed Ayala. Tails up, Ceroo continued to press and eventually Pembridge was rewarded with a goal. The hosts were clearly rattled, and Ceroo dominated the last 20 minutes, only some fantastic goalkeeping from Brad Sherwood denied them a point...

(An error had this game incorrectly played at the National Stadium- but that's not important)
A tedious first half, both teams too afraid to have a proper attack and very few chances on goal.
The second half exploded to life, with end-to-end football and plenty of action and the stadium erupted on the 70th minute when the Chandler Islanders scored their first ever competitive goal. The lead wasn't to last long, two Hyung-min goals from set pieces gave the Jonchastani team the lead, and the Islanders looked like they had given up. Then, in bizarre fashion, Chander Islander defender Miguel mis-hit a pass which caught Philip Smith off his line, bringing the scores level once more, which is how it finished...

Not that it matters much, but do you have Chandler Island entered as Scotland? I guess it could be Angus Oliviera and Hamish Miguel...
Also, the Korean names on the Jonchastani squad (Kim HM, Kim SS, and Park DY) are family name first.
|
The team was entered at the same relative level as Scotland but players had randomly generated names.
Portuguese names.

Will change family names for Korean-y players for second round... if Jonchastan can get past Ceroo
Had to rush to put all the names back in in time for the start, original data met with an unfortuante end at the mariner...
CBC Sports
Interview with Mark Hughes
"Yeah, the lads showed some great spirit, they fought well, but... er, in the end they proved a bit too strong for us, but... er, the disallowed goal should have stood, there's no way the ref could have given that as a foul, but... er, he did, and we missed out on a point."
"Will Robert Earnshaw and Mark Pembridge start against Chander Island?"
"Yeah, you know, there's a pretty settled 11, but.. er, Giggs is missing and Llewellyn came in on the left, I may put Pembridge there for the next game and have Llewellyn further forward, but... er, we'll have to see"
"And Ryan Giggs, the big question- will he be fit to play Jonchastan?"
"He's taken the knock to his knee, but... er, looks like it's on the mend, we're not going to risk him against Chandler Is, but... er, he should be back for the final group game."

KSPN Press Pass
Derek Rae: So, Tommy, what did you think of Karakas' performance last night?
Tommy Smith: Well, they did what they had to do, Derek. I thought it was a decent performance. They had a little bit of luck, too, with the disallowed goal. If that's allowed - who knows what could have happened? What do you think, Janus?
Janus Michallek: Yeah, they were lucky in that. But I thought, over the 90 minutes, they were the better team. It's a perfect start for them. I thought Rosenberg was magnificent, and Brad Sherwood for me was the man of the match. Although - Ceroo did have enough chances to win the game by a couple of goals, with those shots coming off the woodwork.
DR: How about Jonchastan and Chandler Island? That was the big grudge match for this group, wasn't it?
TS: It was all about the second half, really. Very exciting game. It was good for football - not so good for Jonchastan and Chandler Island, because they're two points behind Karakas now, Karakas very much in the driving seat.
JM: Very true. They played some good football, especially in the second half. And I hope for the neutrals that the rest of the games are that exciting!
