A Clash in Civilization Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations: Deluxe Edition

About 10 months after I started writing it, and 6 months after I finished, I've finally published my article on the ISDG online. It's called A Clash in Civilization and it's at Kuro5hin. The article managed to run the gauntlet of the highly cynical and hostile users at K5 and gratifyingly, it was published on the front page - not a common occurrence for this sort of article and it means that all sorts of varied people found it interesting.

The article is almost identical to the one I published here some time ago, so no worries about sensitive information or misrepresentations on Apolyton or indeed any other team. I'm quite happy with it - there are some things that I know could have been improved but on the whole I think it's an entertaining and informative article for not simply Civ player or gamers, but the general audience as a whole.

So, whenever anyone asks you, 'What *is* it that you spend all the time doing?' don't just mumble some nonsense about Civilization and different fansites, direct them to this article. Direct everyone to this article! It is but the first step to Apolyton's domination of the world!

Increase Your PM Length

Some people in the the A/C Forum here on Apolyton have noticed Adrian Hon's article and have started posting about it and asking about the ISDG in the A/C forum. I have directed them to the join thread for this game and to PM Beta if they'd like to join.

I've also shared with them the last news post made by Togas back in December along with a few basic facts about the present situation.

I would LIKE to also share in public some more extensive information about the current status of the game and the "story to this point". I have written a VERY ROUGH DRAFT of some information that might be useful for that. I would HIGHLY ENCOURAGE anyone who would like to take that and work on it into something more or would like to offer me suggestions about how I can change it or mold it. Anything you think we shouldn't share? Stuff we should?

Please post about that.

Here's my VERY ROUGH DRAFT so far:

quote:
The turn we just played is Turn 185 (690 AD).

Apolyton and CFC now share our continent, Apolyton having absorbed all of CDG's former territory and most of GCA's (CFC got the rest of GCA's).

On the other continent, the German Webring Team (GWT) gave GCA a new home and protected them from elimination from the game. Over the past 20-30 turns, the German Webring Team (GWT) team has been wiping out the CGN team.

Apolyton has chosen to gift a city on our continent to CGN to keep them in the game as GWT gifted a city to GCA, keeping them in the game.

At this point, though CGN still holds a single city on their home continent with a bunch of defenders stacked in it, we do not expect them to survive for long. Much of CGN's former lands have been given to GCA by the German team.

So within a few turns, it is quite likely that the German Webring Team (GWT) and Gamecatcher Alliance (GCA) will share a continent while Apolyton, Civilization Fanatics Forum (CFC), and Civilization Gaming Network (CGN) will share a continent (though CGN only has a single city gifted to them by Apolyton).

In economic terms, the two dominant world civilizations are the German Webring Team (GWT) and Apolyton (with GWT 1st in most demographic categories, Apolyton in 2nd).

Technology is still in the early Middle Age.

In terms of how the game STARTED, the quality of the starting locations should probably be noted:

* German Webring Team (GWT), playing the Arabs (Religious and Expansionist, Ansar Warrior UU), started in a nice river valley and received a free settler early in the game. They started with no access to iron, however, and had to invade Firaxis to get a source of iron. After securing iron, they built up their lands and the former Firaxis lands into one of the world's two dominant powers (along with CGN). They then invaded CGN (somewhat recently in historical terms) with an enormous army of Ansar Warriors and other units. Their military campaign has succeeded thusfar in completely decimating the previously dominant CGN civilization and reducing it to a single city on its home continent - a city whose days are most certainly numbered.

* Firaxis, playing the Egyptians (Industrious, Religious, War Chariot UU), started in a very nice-looking starting area with access to iron while their German neighbors had none. Firaxis was defeated when the German Webring Team (GWT) archer rushed them. Firaxis had relatively little in the way of defenses and was mostly overrun.

* Grenoule (the French team), playing the French (Industrious, Commercial, Musketeer UU), started on a narrow jungle and forest isthmus and started an early conflict with Civilization Gaming Network (CGN). Grenoule was wiped out by CGN fairly early in the game, though they managed to put up a much better fight than Firaxis did.

* Civilization Gaming Network (CGN), playing the Ottomans (Industrious, Scientific, Sipahi UU), started with a gorgeous homeland of primarily grassland, some forest, hills, rivers, and a few lakes with a dual chokepoint where they conquered the Grenoules. CGN was the world's dominant economic and cultural power until their civilization was decimated by the German Webring Team (GWT)'s superior military during the recent war.

* Gamecatcher Alliance (GCA), playing as India (Religious, Commercial, War Elephant UU), had a very nice looking starting area with hills, grasslands, and rivers aplenty, but was in the middle of their continent - between CFC and CDG. Civilization Design Group (CDG), playing the Persians, invaded GCA with Immortals and GCA successfully beat the invasion off with supposedly stunning battle luck. They were then also attacked on their other border by CFC, an invasion which they also successfully repelled. They then conquered CDG before turning the attention of their large and now highly experience (lots of unit promotions from all of those victories) toward defeating CFC. They then were attacked by the larger and superior Apolytonian army from the north and almost entirely wiped out themselves before the German Webring Team (GWT) on the other continent gifted them one of their cities. During the conflict, their combat luck was quite spectacular and while they lost the army they had built from an GL received in earlier combat, they received 2 more GL's during the lost war with Apolyton that they used to rush the Great Library in their capital (giving them Feudalism - a tech they previously had not had while Apolyton was using it against them) and building a second army. Despite their fantastic luck with GL's and elite units, they still lost the war due to SHEER SIZE of the Apolytonian army. They made a practice of razing all of their own cities rather than see them fall into Apolytonian hands.

* Civilization Fanatics Forum (CFC), playing as China (Industrious, Militaristic, Rider UU), had a fairly averagish starting area with a lot of forests and hills and a large range of mountains between themselves and their only close neighbor, GCA. While they invaded GCA from behind while GCA was busy fighting CDG, they still lost that war and would have been wiped out by the GCA counter-attack if Apolyton had not attacked GCA and diverted the GCA army back to self-defense. Since the defeat of GCA, CFC has rebuilt their own lands and has been building up the lands claimed from GCA on their side of the continent.

* Civilization Design Group (CDG), playing as Persia (Industrious, Scientific, Immortals UU), arguably had one of the worst starting spots. They stared with a relatively nice capital location on a river valley with grassland, but were squeezed between an enormous jungle to their north (on the other side of which was Apolyton) and mighty GCA directly to their south. When their immortals failed to defeat GCA, they were wiped out by GCA's counter-attack.

* Apolyton, playing as Carthage (Industrious, Commercial, Numidian Mercenary UU), started with an absolutely horrendous loking start, but one more removed from other empires. The starting area included but a handful of grassland tiles and a few hills, but to the north was little but desert, hills, and a large mountain range. To the south was an absolutely enourmous jungle, on the other side of which could be found CDG and the other two civs on the continent beyond that, CFC and GCA. Apolyton successfully used its Industrious trait to, over time, knock down this jungle and build up its lands while the other civilizations on the continent fought each other. While GCA was moving to finish off CFC on the far side of the continent, Apolyton's army (built up over the course of the game), invaded GCA from behind and conquered their empire (mostly due to the overwhelming size of the Apolytonian army). The move also saved CFC from defeat when GCA turned around their army in an ultimately unsuccessful bid to stop the larger Apolytonian army and save their empire from defeat.

After the war, Apolyton performed a massive REX campaign to resettle the conquered CDG and GCA lands to its south. Eventually, Apolyton performed a "palace jump", moving its palace and capital city down to a location 1 tile away from GCA's former capital (which GCA had self-razed).

The point we are at right now in 690 AD is just at the end of that REX campaign and very shortly after that palace jump.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

Went ahead and posted at least the following. None of it is sensitive information:

quote:
Well, a few notes I can make right now in public:

* We just played Turn 185 (690 AD).

* Apolyton is 2nd in the world in most demographic statistics, behind the German Webring Team (GWT), which has 1st in most categories.

* CGN, previously the world's dominant economic and cultural power, has been all but wiped out by GWT's sizable army of Ansar Warriors over the past 20-30 turns.

* Apolyton has recently been involved in a massive REX effort to resettle the lands conquered from GCA. I don't think I've ever played a game where I was moving around that many settlers all at the same time.

*Apolyton and GWT are the dominant world powers now, with CFC in a distant 3rd and GCA in an incredibly distant 4th (having been gifted lands by GWT on their continent to save them from destruction at the hands of Apolyton and CFC). CGN has only two cities left, one on their home continent (whose days are most certainly numbered) and one on our continent which was gifted to them by Apolyton to keep them in the game.

That's probably all I should say out here until we can draft up a news report for public consumption.

It was a monumental and beautiful work of the time, Adrian. I am proud to have helped in a small way and very pleased to see your work finally published.

And Arn, that first one of yours seemed fine, but for the name Grenoule should be, IIRC, Grenouille.

And the article you wrote is JUST Poly-biased enough.

An interesting comment someone posted on K5 about cheating in this game. I replied, being quite vague. Though I imagine GCA will throw a HUGE fit if they read it. Whatever though. :-/

Numerous people in the public forum have requested a partial map that they can see... at least what they can see without violating our team's security.

If it's ok with the team, I'll go ahead and make a map, but post it here first for approval and alteration before we make anything public.

Something I think would be very cool would be to show how our jungle has contracted over time, though some of that of necessity may involve showing tiles that GWT and GCA may not know about.

Thoughts?

We can show them a map with only cities and boarders. That would take away the actual tile improvements and show which tiles have had jungle/forrest removed; which GCA and GWT will already know anyways.

So, how about a map from somewhere near where we encountered GCA for the first time and then one from where we traded maps with CDG and GCA and CFC and then one final map as of now just showing cities and boarders only?

Actually, GWT and GCA will already see all of our tile improvements on land that has at least been explored. In PTW, trading maps reveals tile improvements even in fogged terrain - even in fogged terrain neither map trader has recently explored.
