Gladiator 5: When 4 is just not enough: Sign-up Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

The current rules:

1. Each contestant must distribute 20 points between weapon and armour values which remain constant throughout the contest (e.g. weapon 11, armour 9). These values are public knowledge.

2. Each match is divided up into combat rounds, which are further divided into 3 segments.

3. In each round you must distribute 100 points amongst the 3 segments, each of which requires values for attack, defense and power.
e.g.:
1st A11 D11 P11
2nd A12 D8 P15
3rd A15 D2 P15
The total of all 9 values must equal 100, and the total of the 3 values in any one segment must not exceed 50.

4. These ADP values are modified by the contestants choice of weapon and armour values. Half the armour value is added to each defense, half the weapon value is added to each attack, the weapon value is added to each power and the opponents armour value is subtracted from each power.

5. In each segment the modified attack and defense values are compared. If, in any round, your attack is greater than your opponents defense then you hit them, and so damage equal to the power for that segment.

6. Ties between attack and defense values result in 50% damage rounded down. 0 attack 0 defense ties are possible.

7. In the initial portion of the competition, each contestant will face every other contestant for one match consisting of two combat rounds.

8. In each match, each contestant will begin with 100 HP from which damage is subtracted. A contestant who loses all of these is considered incapacitated and cannot continue with the match (no more segments take place), but is presumed to recover for their other matches, which remain unaffected.

9. If both contestants are incapacitated then the match is considered a draw, and each contestant recieves 1 point.

10. If one contestant is incapacitated then the other is considered the winner and recieves 4 points.

11. If neither contestant is incapatitated, then the one inflicting the most damage in the whole match is considered the winner, and recieves 3 points. If both contestants inflict the same amount of damage then the match is considered a tie and each contestant receives 1 point.

12. The four contestants who receive the most points in this way will proceed to the second portion of the competition.

13. A tie for fourth place will be resolved at the discretion of the GM.

14. The second portion will consist of a knockout competition of matches to the death, exact rules to be announced later.

I'm thinking about making some changes...involving selection of hitpoints in the mix with armor and weapons...but still thinking about how to implement....

I believe that since I won, I'm allowed 1st refusal. And I'll accept. Between Drogue & the Doc there should be enough champions on the battlefield.

Put an end to popups!

8-10 is ideal, so unless we can get 16 (unlikely) stop at 10 maximum.

Okay here's the change proposal.

Instead of choosing just weapons and armor (which is still 20 points) you can now trade those points for extra hitpoints (from the base of 100) in a five to one ratio. Or trade hitpoints for better weapons armor stats in the same ratio. For example:

Skanky Bones
W15 A3 HP110

Defendo the Magnificant.
W5 A20 HP75

Maximum would be 50 points either way. For the semis, instead of the one with the highest hipoints remaining, it would be the one with the greatest ratio remaining. From the previous example if Skanky had 80 points remaining after the 2 rr turns and Defendo had 65 then the winner would be:

Skanky (80/110)% = 72.7%
Defendo (65/75)% = 86.6%

Hence Defendo would win. However in the finals...it is to the death; your hitpoints are all that you have.

I'm trying to add a little spice to this game. What do you think?

I think you're trying to make it harder for me to figure out the round-robin and confuse skanky even more than he is. It'll be Gladiator VII before he figures out want you're trying to do.

The only change I was considering was to give Gladiator champions a 1 point bonus to add to weapons or armor. This would be a 1 time deal, so say if Drogue or DrSpike won again they wouldn't get additional points.
It could even be ablative if others don't like it. It's meant to be more akin to a medal than anything.

Vetoed. Giving the more successful players a bonus, however small, hardly seems fair.

You should be penalising them, not rewarding them, to level the playing field .

Don't change anything.

One point bonus is an unnecessary advantage and knockouts promote taking risks and which makes the game more interesting so keep them.

Personally I'd ditch the KO bonus, though I can live with it. But keep everything else the same, IMHO. We know the rules, continuity is good

So nix both new suggestions. No problem for me.

So now the only thing is do we keep the KO bonus. It seems to be somewhat evenly divided.

Actually it is Doc, Drogue, and myself in favor of losing the bonus and Lj want to keep it. Skanky prolly doesn't understand the concept so 3-1 with one vote remaining.

I'm still somewhat in favor of keeping it for the reasons LJ mentioned, and Spike said, "leaning toward ditching." That's more like a 1 1/2 vs. 2 1/2.
