	How to play SMAX without CD Support Apolyton, pre-order Civilization IV

Okay, I've tried this numerous times, but can't figure out how to get it to work. Perhaps I am using the wrong program, doing it the wrong way...

PLEASE HELP!!

What's the No-CD crack? I've used unsafedisc, safedisc annihilator, but maybe I'm not using them right. Perhaps that's the problem. Or maybe I have the wrong programs...

I'd appreciate that. I've already ruined my game 4 times and had to reinstall everything four times, and on top of it all, the ICD files open with Civ 3 Conquests Scenario Editor, however that works out. No, really. Very wierd. I can't actually open it, but the program that tries to is the Conquest editor...

Ah, obstructor, apparently Tripod or whatever the guy's name is says the download isn't, well, downloadable. Help here. Are there any other places to get this?

Careful, as

1. the mods of the forum tend not to like no-cd links being posted around... after all they are unofficial

2. No-CD hacks tend to be .exe files that have been altered and you need to replace the original .exe with. Sometimes this can cause crashes and off bugs in the game.

If at all possible, get a copy of the CD-burning software Alcohol 120%. It can be used to make an exact copy of a CD you have like the AC one and mount it as a virtual drive on your computer. That way if you play SMAC, the CD-check finds the virtual drive on your hard disk and thinks it's the actual CD. It means you can play without lugging CDs around with you and risking damage.

I have about 5 virtual CDs ATM - Civ2, Civ3 Conquests, Civ3 PTW, SMAX and UFO: Aftermath. Takes up a CD's worth of disk space each time, but that's not so bad.

Guys, I know you're great, helpful and stuff, but I'd like you to remove links to CD cracks, and not post them. This is not the first time I've seen such stuff posted in this forum... and, after all, the forum rules strictly prohibit posting of cracks and such things publically.

So please remove those links, so that no action has to be taken.

Oh, and Commy, if you start making posts in Civ 3 forums or elsewhere asking for hacks, you'll be banned. Òóò íå Ðîññèÿ.

Everyone can delete their own posts, and moderators can delete any posts . Well, in fact, you can edit your posts to be empty as I see you've just done .

Enigma - that line was a reference that Commy I think can understand, given he bears a Russian flag, and that your computer doesn't display properly. Oh, and what you speak about or send via IRC, email, or otherwise, does not concern the rules of the forums. Also, if you have acquired a crack and are using it, then it's better not to mention it afterwards .

I think I can't delete my posts either.

The no CD crack was quite popular once, when SMAX was really hard to find. But now since you can get the planetary expansion pack or laptop addition or something rather cheap (less then $20 I believe) from Walmart or Amazon or other places, I don't see why people still need the no CD crack really.

Two things:

First of, I'm not Russian, so that "ooo ia wingwongpong" stuff makes no sence. I am in fact an American Democrat. I use the Russian Flag because no one else does and it is very easy to see, so I can easily spot my posts. I would like to change it, and maybe add a picture as well, but I don't know how to. I have a username Commy because all my friends would recognize it as me. Why? I have no idea, I just know they would, even though they don't actually make posts, all they do is read them.

Second off, I wanted a no-cd crack so I didn't have to constantly put in the CD, take it out. Never know, it might break, get scratched...

I never knew that it actually was a full download of the expansion, thought it just got rid of safedisc...

I can only delete my own - I assumed everyone could, but on reflection it's only been this last year or so - I assume that's 'cos of the partial mod powers I have for the ACDGII game (eg, when I "edit" my post, at the very top of the page that comes up is the "delete" box to check)

If I try to edit another's - say yours - I get the "You are not logged in or you do not have permission to access this page" message

It's prolly an option that Dan/Mark can provide. I know in the private (free) off-poly forums that I've set up that its been an option, so I'd assume it was also an option they can institute here

Not to kick a dead horse (I wish there was a smiley for that), but the No-CD crack, while obvioulsy an unauthorized hack, is not really in the same class as a download/pirate copy of the game. By itself, it doesn't let you play the game (you still need all the myriad of other files the game installs - and perhaps even some hidden goodies the official install might hide somewhere else), so it is mostly of use to people who have already bought the game. (Yes I know someone could just borrow the game to install it and then use the No-CD after that, that's why I said 'mostly'.)

Furthermore, the original SMAC installation allowed you to run the game without the CD in exactly the same fashion as occurs with the No-CD crack (perhaps giving a hint to the Cracker). The need to have the CD in the drive was a 'TakeBack' bundled with one of the bug-repair/'upgrade' patches; IMhO, that takeback puts this whole issue firmly in the gray area (if it weren't already there just on general principles of being able to protect your investment and to facilitate playing the game without unnecessary hassles).

True, the no-CD crack isn't in the same league. As far as I'm aware, most people use it to avoid the hassle of having to put in the CD. However, strictly speaking, the crack is illegal. Also, it's against the rules of this boards to post anything illegal, and cracks in particular, and that's a sensible prohibition.

Commy, I have no reason to doubt that you have a legal copy of the game and want the crack for your convenience - but please get it through other means than posting for it here . To be honest, it's not really hard to find.

BTW, John, I've seen some very small SMAC download copies lately. As small as 40 MB - leaving out much, of course, but playable, I guess. Some people always know how to make stuff...

For me it is. I looked on the Internet. But, as mentioned earlier in this thread, you would notice that I was using the wrong program. Regardless of how easy it is to find, since I was looking for the wrong thing, it would be highly unlikely for me to find a No-cd Crack when I'm looking for Unsafedisc...

By the way, what does that ooo ai wingywong thing mean?
