Well, if it's for old b*stards:

70s - Star Trek (that stupid little grid game where it didn't even know I'd won).
80s - Empire.
90s - XCom/Moo1.
00s - none yet...

While I've spent the most time playing Civ-style games, none of them had the "wow" factor for me.

I had one in my maths class in about 1978 - it was a strange device made of wood with metal bars and different coloured beads that you could move around

@reds4ever - yep a wopping £400 for a 32kb home computer(more if you wanted a disk drive etc!!).

still it did have the best version of Elite out of the origonal 8bit releases - i waited in vain for a release onto my humble(but better ) Atari 8bit.

80's - Wizards Crown.
This RPG had a relatively advanced combat mechanics and huge range of different skill attributes. Also, there were some cool magical weapons to be found

90's - Master of Orion 1 & 2.
These are the two games, that made me survive the decade (almost to the point, where I was almost dying from deprivation).

00's - Civ3.
since the only game from 00's I've played is Civ3, then I guess it must be it.

80's: well, some of the C64 games were good, can't name any in particular.

90's: Civ1. definently. it changed my life.

00's: SMAC or WarCraft 3. haven't played that many of the new games, and my first real touch to SMAC was in June 2002.

SMAC and CS came out in the 90s... is it because you guys were impressed with the game at that decade?

maybe they didn't get the game until after the year 2000. I didn't play counterstrike until a couple of years ago. didn't care for it, just like all the other shooters

I gotta say the multiplayer for Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow is pretty damn kickass on Xbox live.

Full PM-box? Change here!

80's - Star Raiders. I was the one who actually figured out how to play it. I was so proud.
Managed to get to Star Commander rank 1 (The highest rank IIRC) once but I had to start on commander level and I got a fabulous start with all of my bases closely clustered. Killed off the fast-moving enemy patrols first and managed to stave off having any bases destroyed. Only redocked once to restore energy levels and a teensy bit of damage.
It goes without saying of course that my average rank over all games was probably still Garbage Scow Captain class-something.

90's - Civ/Civ2 - too hard to distinguish between them really. Civ was the first for it's time but you could modify Civ2. Moo came close behind.

2000's - EU/EU2 - Salivated over EU from late 2000 right up until EU2 came out (which I actually managed to get). This one will never leave my hard drive. Paradox.
