There are currently four ships which require a name: the GH transport cruiser, the MT coastguard, the VV coastguard, and the Messenan laser cruiser.
As besides the Greek and Roman mythology I assume we're also drawing from Norse mythology (we have a spirit after all). That's why I've surfed the internet a bit for some Norse versions of Greek-Roman gods we've already used for ship names.
Some options for the transport cruiser:
Since we've got a transport named Pegasus:
- Aarvak - the horse drawing the sun’s chariot in Norse mythology. He has been identified with the Greek Pegasus.
- Alsvid(r): the other horse drawing the chariot
Or if we want to keep the "messenger god" theme such as with the Hermes and Mercury:
- Heimdall - The guardian of the bridge to Asgard and the messenger of the gods. He is the god of light and protection.
- Hermod - The messenger of the gods. Often equated to the Greek god Hermes. (I guess this one sounds too similar to Hermes though)
- Valkyrie - The battle-maidens, who choose the best warriors to join Odin in Valhalla to wait for the battle Ragnarok. They are also the messengers of Odin.
As for the combat ships, perhaps we could go with a "war god" or "sea god" theme?
Sea gods:
- Poseidon: Greek
- Neptunus: Roman variety
- Aegir - the god of the sea in Norse mythology. He was both worshipped and feared by sailors, for they believed that Aegir would occasionally appear on the surface to take ships, men and cargo alike, with him to his hall at the bottom of the ocean. Sacrifices were made to appease him, particularly prisoners before setting sail.
- Njord The Norse god of winds, sea and fire. He brings good fortune at sea and in the hunt.
War gods: Mars, Ares, Odin.
Then there's of course still the SCC Enterprise, as that name wasn't used for the SCC GeneralTacticus.
Any preferences?

Good point.
Maybe just limit the "naming after a player" to GT, to honour GeneralTacticus' role (with Maniac) in founding our faction
Perhaps then we leave the coastguard cutters as seagods - or maybe follow the US custom of naming vessels after states and cities (eg the Lexington, the Missouri, etc) and adapt it by naming our cutters after the naval bases they came from (so we'd have the SCC Argos, the SCC Gytheum, the SCC Messena, etc) - it'd also make it easier to keep track of them for role playing purposes
Then our more offensive cruisers could be sea gods, with perhaps our first Chaos or Shard plasma or silksteel cruiser being awarded the Enterprise label

A friendly person gave me the following answer:
quote:
The Russian word for Control/Manage/Rule would be "Управление" (Upravlyeniye), and so "Upravlyeniye Moryamii", but that does come out as "Management of the Seas", which sound strange. Not recommended.
What you are looking for (and indeed, what Vladivostok is) is "master", not "control". Thus, you would say "Vladyelyets Morei" for Master of the Seas.
The problem with "Master of the Waves" is that waves can mean many things, and so to say "Master of the Seawaves" you would say "Vladyelyets Morskih Voln", Master of the Sea Waves. I would just go with "Master of the Sea" if I were you.
Of course, "Vladyelyets" looks strange in Latin You might be able to get away with "Vladelyets" or "Vladyelets", but if you try "Vladelets" I will come and hurt you
I'm not sure of the SMACX character limit, so "Vladmorei", "Vlad Morei", etc would be fine. "Vladimorei" sounds neat, too, I suppose.
BTW: Vladivostok comes from "Vladyelets Vostoka", which means Master of the East. One could also look at 'Vladivostok" and think "(the) Master and the East" (Vlad(yelyets) i vostok). Or if we take it to be "Vlad" (name), it could mean "Vlad and the East", but this would never be how one would translate it.

How would we call the new GH transport? Since no one's made any suggestion yet, I thought a bit about a few options.
One could be Alsvid or Alsvidr. That was besides Aarvak the other horse drawing the sun's chariot in Norse mythology.
Or perhaps we could go with Tiger's Claw or Concordia? Those were spacecraft carriers in the Wing Commander series, in case someone remembers those.
As for the unity rover down south with the Gaians, perhaps we could go for Jade's Jaguars, commanded by Mara Jade. She's a Star Wars character that appears in the Thrawn trilogy, books by Tiimothy Zahn who are kinda episode VII, VIII and IX in the Star Wars series. For the record, while I more or less like Star Wars, I'm certainly not a fanatic of it. It's just that a while ago I added a quote of hers to my Spartan Quotes collection (of which I put one in my signature from time to time), and I can't immediately find anyone else whose name starts with a "J", to go with "Jaguars".
